  • Arthur B. Ruff, 80, Bedford

    Arthur Boyce Ruff, 80 of Bedford passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was born on Wednesday, March 28, 1928, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Otis Ruff and Lillie Orange Ruff. He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Lelia Louise Overstreet Ruff, a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Billy Walker, and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Bowden Ruff.

    He was a retired employee of the Rubatex Corporation and attended Cool Springs Presbyterian Church. He was also a U. S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict.

  • Marshall P. Roades, 80, Wirtz

    Marshall Preston Roades, 80 of Wirtz, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008. Born on July 24, 1928, a son of the late Milton Preston Roades and Virginia Maupin Roades.

    He was also preceded in death by a brother; Joe Roades.

  • Carl C. Moses, Winston-Salem, NC

    Carl C. Moses of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. Dr. Moses was born on April 14, 1921, in Princeton, WV, the son of Charles Luther and Berlie Graham Moses.

    He attended Roanoke College but left to join the Army Air Corps, serving as a bombardier-pilot instructor during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the College of William and Mary. He later attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, earning a masters degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science.

  • Lucia T. Carter, 87, Bedford

    Lucia Talley Carter, 87, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Runk & Pratt Residential Adult Care, Forest. She was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Petersburg, a daughter of the late Alexander Williamson Talley and Blanche LaMont Neaves Talley.

  • Edith F. Witt, 68, Lynchburg

    Edith Fay Witt, 68, of Grace Lodge in Lynchburg, VA died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. A daughter of the late Ollie Harris Witt and Elizabeth Rice Wilkes Witt, she was born Feb. 16, 1940.

    Fay was also preceded in death by a brother, Ollie C. Witt.

    She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.

  • Lloyd G. Reynolds, 88

    Lloyd Gill Reynolds, 88, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Care Haven.

    Born Nov. 12, 1919, in Bedford County, he was the son of the late Jesse Brown Reynolds and Gracie Dawson Reynolds.

    He was retired from Erath Veneer Corp. He was also a farmer and logger.

    He was a member of Cedar Grove Christian Church.

  • Olive C. Padgett, 81, Bedford

    Olive Clark Padgett, 81, of Bedford, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1926, in Waltham, MA, a daughter of the late James W. Clark and Kate Smith Robertson Clark.

    In addition to her parents she is preceded by one sister, Rhoda Clark.

    Patrick David "Cornbread" Nester, 47 of Thaxton, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008.

  • Winston M. Dinwiddie, 94, Bedford

    Winston Mattox Dinwiddie, 94 of Bedford and formerly of Moneta passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at the Elks National Home. He was born on Saturday, June 6, 1914, in Franklin Co., a son of the late Winston Thomas Dinwiddie and Nettie Mattox Dinwiddie.

    He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Dinwiddie, James Dinwiddie and Gilbert Dinwiddie.

  • James L. Blake , 75, Bedford

    James Lee Blake, age 75, of Bedford went into eternal rest with our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ on September 20, 2008, at his residence with his wife and family by his side. James was born on May 2, 1933, in Bedford County.

    He was a devout Christian of the Southern Baptist Faith; a believer and doer of the Word of God. James, nicknamed “Sam”, was a retiree of the United States Air Force and the U.S. Postal Service, accumulating over 50 years of service.
