  • Loretta K. Turpin, 71, Bedford

    Loretta Keen Turpin, 71, of Bedford, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. She was born in McDowell County, WV on Jan. 9, 1937, a daughter of the late, Thomas Keen and Rebecca Ann Steele Keen.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Harrison Keen; a niece Sandra Cornwell.

  • Lillian T. Taylor, 78, Cleveland, OH

    Lillian Thomas Taylor, 78 of Cleveland, Ohio and formerly of Bedford County, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at The Renaissance Health Care Center , Olmstead Township, OH. She was born on Sunday, March 16, 1930, in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Eula Patterson Thomas.

    She was also preceded in death by a son, Tony Ray Taylor.

  • Wellington Selden, Sr., Dover, DE

    Wellington "Gay" Selden, Sr., of Dover, DE departed this life on Aug. 30, 2008, after a brief illness. He was born in Bedford and attended Bedford Training School and St. Paul University.

    He enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired after 31 years.

    He is survived by his wife, Peggy and his eleven children, twenty-one grandchildren, four great grandchildren, five sisters, one brother and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral service was Sept. 5, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church in Dover, DE.

  • Dianne E. Moore, 57, Lynchburg

    On Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at 7:50 in the evening, Cynthia Dianne Eubank Moore passed from this world to the next as the result of nearly 57 years of hard living and one overwhelming case of cancer. She now rests with her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her late husband, Kenny Moore. She leaves to ponder this mystery, a sister, Joyce Eubank Shultz, Joyce's husband Wayne Shultz, and their son Brandon, all of the Staunton area, and stepdaughters Cynthia M. Tucker, Kimberlee M. DeHart, and Tamara Elizabeth Moore.

  • Ruby A. Jones, 96, Bedford

    Ruby Ayres Jones, 96, passed away Aug. 25, 2008, at Oakwood Manor, Bedford. She was born May 21, 1912, in Arvonia, daughter of Reuben Thomas and Ethel Dunnavant Ayres.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Jones.

  • Frank H. Gordon, Jr.

    On Sept. 5, 2008, Bedford lost one of its most loved native sons. Frank Helton Gordon, Jr., better known as "Buddy" passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He fought a brief but valiant fight against Leukemia. Buddy was born on Friday, March 29, 1929 to Eva Frances Burnette Gordon and Frank Helton Gordon, Sr., who preceded him in death.

  • Florence M. Burnside, 75, Bedford

    Florence Marilyn Burnside, 75, of Bedford, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at her home, after a short illness. She was the loving wife of her late husband, Robert J. Burnside. They were married 39 years.

    Born May 22, 1933, in Dover, NJ, Florence was a daughter of the late Leo William Miller and Stella Fichter Miller.

  • Mozelle G. Bamber, 81, Moneta

    Mozelle Gurley Bamber, 81, of Moneta passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Jan. 17, 1927, in Micro, NC, a daughter of the late Thomas Harold Gurley and Eudelle Corbett Gurley.

    She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bertram George Bamber.

    She was assistant librarian in Springfield, Massachusetts, Public School System and was a member of IOTA Master of OSF, Delta Kapta of ESA and Beta Sigma Phi.

  • Roy R. Arrington, 100, Forest

    In the quiet hours of the morning on Sept. 6, 2008, Roy Rogers Arrington, 100, of Forest completed the tasks of his blessed life on earth. He was born Jan. 1, 1908, in the Charlemont community of Bedford County a son of the late Roland Eugene Arrington and Etta Jane Vaughn Arrington. His beloved wife of 73 years, Louise Coffey Arrington, survives him in their longtime home.

    Mr. Arrington was one of twelve siblings. He survived all but one sister, Perley Arrington Goolsby and husband, Cecil of Richmond.
