  • Rachel M. Cheek, 87, Thaxton

        Rachel Miller Cheek, 87, of Thaxton, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at Bedford Memorial Hospital.  She was born on Dec. 3, 1923 a daughter of the late Homer Randall Miller and Annie Mae Redman Miller.   Rachel was retired from Rubatex and a member of Thaxton Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Hershel Morgan and her second husband, Mercer Cheek; a daughter, Gloria Jean Mays; a son, Dennis W. Morgan; a brother, Roy J. Miller. 

  • Walter E. Branch, 76, Bedford

        Walter Earl Branch, 76, of Bedford, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 in Bedford Memorial Hospital.  Born Oct. 4, 1934 in Bedford County, a son of the late Mayoma Austin Branch and George Walter Branch.
        Earl was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.  He was a retired employee of Rubatex Corp. with over 44 years of service. 

  • Harold C. Reid, 83, Forest

        Harold C. Reid, 83, departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011. Harold was born in Lynchburg and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Reid.
        Harold married the love of his life and his EC Glass High School sweetheart Ann Walkup Reid December 25, 1948. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry in Sales with over 48 years of service.

  • Kenneth L. ‘Punky’ Rice, 79, FL

        Kenneth Leo “Punky” Rice, 79, of Pompano Beach, FL, passed away Aug. 10, 2011. He was born in Lynchburg and grew up in Big Island. He was the son of the late Coy E. Rice and Iris “Mickie” Rice.

  • Dicksie N. Martin, 79, Bedford

        Dicksie Nance Martin, 79, of Bedford, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Friday, Feb. 12, 1932 in Crumpton, MD, a daughter of the late Richard Estes Nance and Marie Biddle Nance.

  • James L. Teass, 90, Bedford

        James Lee Teass, 90, of Bedford, passed away Aug. 13, 2011.  He was born in Bedford on March 24, 1921; he spent his life working the family farm.  He is survived by his beloved sister, Annie Elizabeth Teass.  He also leaves behind numerous cousins and a special friend, Jean Spangler.  James was preceded in death by his mother, Nannie Wells Teass and his father, Charley Teass. 

  • Edward S. Harman, 70, Bedford

        Edward S. Harman, 70, of Bedford, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011.  He was born in Floyd County at his home on May 17, 1941 a son of the late Raymond Lewis Harman and Beulah Mae Keith Harman. Ed was a retired teacher with Bedford County Public Schools in Agriculture Education and Shop Teacher for 40 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Gloria Jean Johnson. 

  • Edgar Arthur, 69, Natural Bridge Station

        Edgar Lewis Arthur, 69, of Natural Bridge Station, VA, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011. He was the husband of the late Brenda Ross Arthur.
        Edgar was born Aug. 29, 1941 in Bedford. He was the son of the late Crawford Lewis and the late Blanche Nichols Arthur. He retired from Georgia Pacific after 37 years and was a member of Big Island Baptist Church. He was also a member of Big Island Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

  • Joseph P. Johnson, 94, Bedford

        Joseph Page Johnson, 94, of Bedford, died on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. Born on Oct. 21, 1916 in Bedford County, a son of the late Elisha James Johnson and Virginia Elizabeth Powers. In addition to his parents Joseph was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis Johnson, Floyd Johnson and Roy Johnson, a sister, Drucilla Price.

  • Louise D. Bolling, 84, Altavista

        Louise Dillard Bolling, 84, of Altavista died Monday Aug. 15, 2011 at her home. She was the wife of the late Russell Alton Bolling.
        Louise was born June 27, 1927 in Pittsylvania County a daughter of the late Eugene Emmett Dillard and Annie Epperson Dillard.
        She worked for over 33 years at the Lane Company and was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church in Altavista.
