    Charles A. Wood, 64, of Bedford, passed away on Fri., May 25, 2012 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries from an auto accident. He was the son of the late Charles Ira and Ruby Rice Wood. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Mack E. Wood; brother-in-law, Clarence L. Brookshier; sister-in-law, Barbara S. Wood; niece, Vicky W. Harris and his father-in-law, Paul Waddell.

  • Jewel M. Markham, 66, Forest

    Jewel Lee Martin Markham, 66, of Forest, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at her residence. She was born Nov. 16, 1945 in Bedford, a daughter of the late Ethlene Nichols Martin and Warren Thomas Martin.
    Jewel was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. She loved her family especially her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren and loved attending their sporting events. She was also an artist. Jewel enjoyed vacationing at Emerald Isle, NC and was a huge VT Hokie football fan.

    Lillian Brown Thomas, 71, of Bedford, passed away on May 27, 2012 of natural causes. She was the wife of the late Henry Thomas. She is survived by her children, Rodney Thomas, Thelma Ragland, Gloria Lindsay, and Reggie Thomas. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Fri., June 1, 2012 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Bedford Funeral Home.

  • Thomas E. Evans, Sr., 85, Bedford

    Thomas Eugene Evans, Sr., 85, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Galax on April 3, 1927. A son of the late William D. Evans and Beulah Wilkes Evans. In addition to his parents Thomas was preceded in death by three brothers, William Evans, James Evans and Don Evans; one sister, Mildred Lee; and one grandson, Tyler Holbrook.
    Thomas served our country in the United States Navy during WWII. He loved animals, classic country music, and watching western movies. Most of all he loved his children and grandchildren.

  • Irene H. Spinner, 97, Bedford

        Irene H. Spinner, 97, of Bedford died May 12, 2012 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born July 2, 1914 to the late Warren and Lettie Jones Harris and the wife of the late William Monroe Spinner.
        She is survived by four sons, Leroy Spinner, Howard Spinner, James Spinner, and Bobby Spinner.
        Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Mt. Rock Baptist Church, Goode. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

        William Elzar Mayhew, 70 of Rustburg, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his residence. He was a son of the late William Harry Mayhew and Nora Lee Burnette Mayhew.
        He is survived by his son, William E. Mayhew, Jr., two daughters, Susan Annette Mayhew, Kimberly M. Barksdale.
        Graveside Services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 1 PM at Morgans Baptist Church Cemetery.

        John Lewis Tolley, 66, of Bedford, passed away May 2, 2012.
        He was a son of the late Clarence Tolley and Willie Tooley.
        He is survived by his wife, Judy Abbott Tolley; two daughters, Tammy Tuck and Theresa Tolley. He was also survived by two sisters, Rachel Snead of Bedford, and Audrey Minnick of Big Island.

        Ruth Parsons Rouse, 88 of Huddleston, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Samuel and Maude Parsons.
        She is survived by her daughters, Donna Guffey, Dale Woodard, Debbie Anthony, Denise Trail, a son, David Rouse.
        A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Bethesda United Methodist Church.

  • Ella B. Mays, 74, Forest

        Ella Branham Mays, 74, of Forest, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 13, 2012, with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late William Mays. Mrs. Mays was born June 27, 1937 in Amherst County a daughter of the late James B. Branham and the late Carsia Branham.
        Ella retired from the Central Virginia Training Center where she had worked for more than twenty-three years.

        Albert Marvin Hunter of Bedford passed away on May 7, 2012 at his home.  Born March 2, 1931 in Irving, KS, he was the son of the late Ezra and Rose Hunter.  In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by his sister Clema Haller and two brothers, Wilbur and Virgil Hunter.
