• Ruth P. Rouse, 88, Huddleston

        Ruth Parsons Rouse, 88 of Huddleston, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at her residence. She was a daughter of the late Samuel and Maude Parsons.
        She is survived by her daughters, Donna Guffey, Dale Woodard, Debbie Anthony, Denise Trail, a son, David Rouse.
        A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Bethesda United Methodist Church.
        Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.

  • Ella B. Mays, 74, Forest

        Ella Branham Mays, 74, of Forest, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 13, 2012, with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late William Mays. Mrs. Mays was born June 27, 1937 in Amherst County a daughter of the late James B. Branham and the late Carsia Branham.
        Ella retired from the Central Virginia Training Center where she had worked for more than twenty-three years.

  • Albert M. Hunter, Bedford

        Albert Marvin Hunter of Bedford passed away on May 7, 2012 at his home.  Born March 2, 1931 in Irving, KS, he was the son of the late Ezra and Rose Hunter.  In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by his sister Clema Haller and two brothers, Wilbur and Virgil Hunter.

  • Thomas J. Abbott, 75, Richmond

        Thomas J. Abbott, 75, of Richmond, passed away May 11, 2012.
        He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anne Britton Abbott; his twin children, daughter, Blair Abbott Mitchell and her husband, Brad, and son, Michael Abbott and his wife, Elizabeth.
        Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by two sisters, Rachel and Margaret; and is survived by a brother, Bob Abbott; and sister, Betty Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

  • William J. Warren, 84, Memphis

    William Jefferson Warren, 84, spokesman, philosopher and peddler, died peacefully May 4, 2012 after a grand and full life. He was born on Sept. 14, 1927 to Pete and Faye Warren.
    He was a veteran of WWII and married to his bride Hope Keller Warren for 44 years, before her death in 1998.

  • John L. Tolley, 66, Bedford

    John Lewis Tolley, 66 of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was a son of the late Clarence L.Tolley and Willie Goff Tolley.
    He is survived by his wife, Judy Abbott Tolley; two daughters - Tamatha (Tammie) Tuck, Theresa Lynn Tolley.
    A graveside service was conducted on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

  • Nancy A. Turner, 66, Bedford

    Nancy Anders Turner, 66, of Bedford, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012 after a lengthy illness.
    Born on Jan. 3, 1946 in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Robert Curtis Anders and Virginia Thomas Anders. Nancy graduated from Pikeville High School, Pikeville, KY and attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY and National Business College in Roanoke.
    She worked for 20 years at Carilion Clinic, retiring as Payroll Manager.

  • Andrew D. Johnson, 4, Concord

    Andrew David Johnson, 4 of Concord, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was a son Michael B. Johnson and Jocelyn M. Billi.
    In addition to his father and mother, he is survived by his sister, Hailey Johnson.
    A memorial service was conducted on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 7 p.m. at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.

  • Joyce Detamore, 66, Bedford

    D. Joyce Detamore, 66, of Bedford, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born on Nov. 25, 1945 she was the daughter of the late Arlie Elmer Mullins and Beatrice Mullins.
    In addition to her father, Joyce was preceded in death by two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
    She was a member of Lighthouse Free Will Baptist Church in Bedford. Joyce was the owner and operator of Joyce’s Beauty Salon where she dedicated 30 years of service to her devoted clients.

  • Marvin D. Ashwell, 55, Thaxton

    Marvin Dale Ashwell, 55, of Thaxton, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012. He was born in Bedford on Sept. 4, 1956.
    He is survived by his mother, Coretta Booth Lawhorn; his fiancée, Natalie Williamson; his children, Roberta Ashwell Latempa and husband, John; Griffin Ashwell, grandchildren, Donte’, Briana, Jadon and Hannah; brothers and sisters, Richard Wayne Sinclair, Wayne Lawhorn, Glenda Crouch, Karen Evans and Patricia Delgado.
    Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Burch-Messier Walnut Street Chapel with a brief memorial service beginning at 3:45 p.m.
