  • Virginia I. Bruce, 62, Bedford

    Virginia Irene Bruce, 62, of Bedford, died Monday, April 16, 2012. Born Dec. 28, 1949 in Bedford; she was a daughter of the late Rawlings Edward Bruce and Dorothy Gibbs Bruce.
    Virginia was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
    She is survived by her sister, Cordelia Ann Bruce of Hunt Valley, MD.
    Virginia was a graduate of Liberty High School in Bedford. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree from Towson University in Towson, MD and her Master of Arts degree from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, MD.

  • Henry C. Brown, 98, Franklin County

    Henry Clay Brown, age 98, of the Scruggs Community of Franklin County passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2012 in a local nursing home. Born Dec. 11, 1913 to the late James Loudon Brown and Fannie Price Morgan Brown, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Mary Byrd Brown; his brothers Charles, Randolph, James and Walter and their spouses; and his sisters Neva, Angie and Pearl and their spouses; his sons-in-law Geryl G. Wade, Sr. and Ronald L. Davis, his brothers-in-law William T. Byrd and James McMahon, his sisters-in-law Julia B. McMahon and Reva W.

  • Laurie O. Thomas, 51, Montvale

        Laurie Lee Olsen Thomas, 51 of Montvale, passed away Thurs-day, April 12, 2012 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born on Thursday, May 12, 1960 in Harrisonburg, a daughter of the late David L. Olsen and Annie Laurie Daniel Olsen of Roanoke, who survives.

  • Sandra J. Overstreet, 56, Bedford

        Sandra Jarels Overstreet, 56, of Bedford, died Sunday, April 8, 2012.  Born June 22, 1955 in Salem; she was a daughter of Nellie Green Jarels and the late Dennis Jarels.

  • Isabell C. Johnson, 96, Bedford

        Isabell Catherine Craig Johnson, 96, of Bedford, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012. Born June 10, 1915 in Bedford County; she was a daughter of the late Paschal Hopkins Craig and Luettie Jane Stevens Craig.
        Isabell was the last charter member of Bedford Church of God.
        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude E. Johnson; a daughter, Brenda J. Manley; a grandson, Sean O’Connell; and brothers, Billy, Garrett, Robert, and Warren Craig.

  • Maynard J. Mens, 90, Bedford

        Maynard John Mens, 90, of Bedford, died Saturday, April 14, 2012. Born May 23, 1921 in Minnesota; he was a son of the late William Mens and Elda Eickhoff Mens.
        Maynard served the United States in the Army during World War II, European African Eastern Theatre. He was a prisoner of war in Germany following the Battle of the Bulge. Maynard was recognized as a hard worker. He enjoyed his yard, flowers, and trees.

  • Perry A. Newman, 59, Goode

        Perry Allen Newman, 59 of Goode, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012 at his residence. He was born on Friday, Aug. 22, 1952 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Allen Marvin Newman and Rosalind Alice Perry Newman of Bedford, who survives.
        He was retired from Powell Trucking & Equipment.

  • Madeline E. Hartle, 67, Bedford

        Madeline Elizabeth Hartle “Granny”, 67, of Bedford, died Friday, April 13, 2012. Born Nov. 25, 1944 in Norfolk; she was a daughter of the late Carl Theodore Massie and Ruth Elizabeth Adkins Massie, and the widow of Donald Lee Hartle.
        Madeline attended Blue Ridge Community Church.

  • Clarence L. Davis, 77, Bedford

        Clarence Lenwood “John” Davis, 77 of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Sunday, Oct. 28, 1934 in Bedford County, a son of the late John Willie Davis and Dollie Ann Hensley Davis.

  • Marian S. Cocke, 53, Bedford

        Marian Shelton “Mern” Cocke, of Bedford, passed away on April 6, 2012 at the age of 53.  She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Aaron Shelton. 
        Marian is survived by her husband, Barry Cocke; her mother, Doris Shelton; brothers, Bobby Shelton and wife, Jean Shelton; Kim Shelton and wife, Patty Shelton; brother-in-law, Danny Cocke and wife, Kathy Cocke; and her beloved animals.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
