  • Robert A. Hart, 60, Huddleston

        Robert Allen Hart, 60 of Huddleston, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010 at his residence. He was born on Monday, July 31, 1950 in New York, NY, a son of the late Robert Warren Hart and Hilda VanAlstyne Hart. 

        Surviving are his sister, Lee Holcomb and her husband, Richard of Huddleston; a brother, Kenneth Hart and wife Anne of Woodstock; a nephew, Carl Holcomb; nieces, Lydia Holcomb, Alison Marsh; great-nephews, Jeremiah Marsh, Eli Marsh, Levi Marsh.
        Funeral services will be held at a later date.

  • Randie L. Goff, Big Island

        On Aug. 22, 2010 Randie Lee “Rooster” Goff won his race and entered into his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior lighting the path, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 20, 1956 he never left his home in the mountains that he loved so dear, Big Island, VA. He was preceded in death by his father Talmadge Richard “Pete” Goff.

        Michael Darin Jeffreys, 44, of Annapolis, Maryland, died Monday Aug. 16, 2010.

        Michael is survived by his mother, Peggy Noell Jeffreys, of Bedford, two brothers, William A. Jeffreys and Jack Todd Jeffreys and his wife, Angie of Annapolis. A niece Alexandra Isabel Jeffreys and a nephew, Jack Conner Jeffreys. His grandmothers, Margaret L. Noell of Bedford, and Madell Day, of Warrington, VA. Also a devoted friend, Jenn Nagy and her two children, Briana and Andrew.

  • Joe R. Coates, 80, Lynchburg

        Joe Roy Coates, 80, of Lynchburg, died peacefully in his garden Monday, Aug. 16, 2010. Born in Swannanoa, NC, Sept. 8, 1929, he was a son of the late Albert C. Coates and Emma J. Creaseman Coates.

        He is survived by three sons, Thomas F. Coates of Atlanta, GA, Michael A. Coates (Mary M.) of Amherst and Joseph A. Coates (Michelle) of Lynchburg; a daughter, Mary C. Pollard of Bedford.

  • Lawrence J. Brown, 89, Evington

        Lawrence James Brown, 89, of Evington, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at his residence. He was born on Wednesday, June 22, 1921 in Leesville, a son of the late Colie D. Brown and Ethel Anne Cundiff Brown.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mays Brown.

        He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and a U. S. Army veteran having served during World War II.

  • Edward L. Burnett, Sr., 71, Forest

        Edward Lewis Burnett, Sr., 71, of Forest, passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010 at his residence. He was the loving and devoted husband of Martha Walker Burnett for 53 years.

        Born May 25, 1939 in Forest, he was a son of the late Fred A. Burnett and Estelle Gordon Burnett. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister, Fred A. Burnett, Jr., James Peronneau Burnett, Sr., Gordon “Tally” Burnett and Betty B. Weiland.

  • William J. Hancock, 79, Chamblissburg

        William Jack Hancock, 79, of Chamblissburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010.
        He was born Dec. 28, 1930, son of the late William Benjamin Hancock and Mary Etta Montgomery Hancock. A nephew, Kevin Hancock, also preceded him in death.
        Jack served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a farmer and retired from GE in 1988 after 32 years of service. He was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

  • Edward B. Hopkins, 59, Bedford

        Edward Brightwell Hopkins, 59, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at UVA Hospital. 

        He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Karen C. Hopkins; a son, Joshua Scott Hopkins and fiancée, Elizabeth M. Stewart of Roanoke; a step-son, Shawn Cassidy and friend, Melissa Crews of Forest; a sister, Elizabeth A. Stewartson of Bedford; a brother, Walter Hopkins and wife, Connie of Goodview; also several nieces and nephews. 

  • Boyd L. Royer, 43, Lynchburg

        Boyd Lee Royer, 43, devoted husband and son, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010. He was the husband of Wendy Fornes Royer and son of Paul and Elizabeth Royer.

        Born in Lynchburg on Dec. 28, 1966, he was a Sgt. with the City of Bedford Police Department; a US Air Force Veteran and member of Memorial Christian Church.
