  • Bedford Main Street takes a look ahead

        Sue Montgomery, Bedford Main Street’s director, is hoping to get business sponsors for the program. She unveiled a new sponsorship program at a lunch with Bedford business owners recently.
        According to Montgomery, Bedford is one of 25 Main Street communities in Virginia. Bedford has held this designation since 1985. Lynchburg is the largest of the 25.
        “We, of course, are one of the smaller communities,” Montgomery said.

  • Local barbershop continues to expand

        Tom’s Barbershop, located in the By-Pass Business Center at 800B Blue Ridge Avenue, is now up to three barbers with the addition of Bill Acors, who started six weeks ago.

        “I met Tom in a barbershop in Lynchburg,” said Acors, explaining how he and Tom Gentry, the barbershop’s owner, met. He said Gentry told him his business had reached the point where he needed a third barber and made him an offer.

  • Pass the ammunition

        It matters here.

        There is a fierce dialogue raging across our nation.  The topic is guns, and they are an integral part of life in Bedford.
        One reason is that Bedford is the top deer-hunting county in one of the top deer-hunting states in this nation.  In 2011, Bedford County saw a yield of 7,969 deer, tops in the state.  Southampton was second, with Bedford nabbing 1,400 more.

  • Area residents get their kicks in Bedford

        People in the Bedford area got a new opportunity to get their kicks with martial arts when Sidney Burns opened Super Kicks Karate in Bedford’s Centertown last fall.

        The karate school opened its doors on Sept. 1 in a historic building at the corner of South Bridge Street and Main Street. The interior of the 19th century building’s ground floor has been renovated. One interior wall has been stripped down so the original brickwork, which has been sealed, is visible.

        What goes better with coffee than chocolate? That’s the thought that ran through Malori Bennett’s mind when she asked Carl and Mary Matice, owners of Cao Artisan Chocolate to join her in her new business. The new business is Parallel Cafe, a coffee shop that opened its doors on North Bridge Street on Dec. 1.

  • Bedford House temporarily suspends operations

    Bedford Hospice House, Inc. opened Bedford House off Falling Creek Road in the fall of 2011.

         After 15 months of providing care and comfort to many residents and their families, the organization will temporarily suspend operations at the end of December and explore several new operating models with its goal to provide opportunities for long-term success,  according   to   volunteer  Board  President Jeffrey Fulgham.

  • More space for Floors and More

    Floors and More moved from its original West Main Street location to the 6C’s Shopping Center this past summer. The move has provided more space and better customer parking for the business of Bob and Jann Sloper.

        The showroom is more than double the size of what it had. One side of the showroom, a space the same size as the Main Street store, is dedicated to samples of the flooring the business has to offer, and it also now has expanded flooring lines.

  • Peaks of Otter Lodge closes

         Carole Edwards and Jackie Werb drove to the Peaks of Otter on a gorgeous fall morning last week to take one last trip around Abbott Lake and have a final meal at the restaurant.
        The Peaks of Otter Lodge at milepost 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway shut down this week. Last Thursday's Thanksgiving meal was the last large-scale event at the lodge, whose final guests checked out Monday morning.
