  • Bedford Country Store to offer organic foods

        A fixture of Bedford Main Street is planning to add a green section to its variety of offered services.
        The Bedford Country Store LLC, located at 115 North Bridge St., will soon open an organic whole foods market as part of an initiative to offer affordable, all natural sustenance to the Bedford community.

  • Gallery 2000 director hopes to support, encourage local artists

        A new fines arts center is set to bring added culture and creativity to the Bedford area. 
        Gallery 2000, located at 318 W. Washington St., is an innovative arts hub that opened this month, allowing local artisans to display their craftsmanship. Run by director Diane Gallant, the gallery, a non-profit venture, is intended to be “an incubator for the Bedford art community.”

  • Trident Seafoods to lease Brooks Food facility

        Some local workers got good news this week.
        Trident Seafoods Corporation, headquartered in Seattle, Wash., has entered into a transaction with Capital Recovery Group to lease the former Golden West Foods, Inc., Bedford, facility and equipment for a period of about one year.
        “We’re pleased that it’s going to restart production,” Bedford City Manager Charles Kolakowski said. “At least some of the employees (from Brooks Food Group) will retain their employment.”

  • Local artisans hope Trail will lead to Bedford

        Bedford continues to look for ways to promote its artisan community.

        Close to 50 people turned out for a presentation on establishing an Artisan Trail in the Bedford area.
        “Bedford is ready for this,” said Brigitte Peterson, who introduced the program. Peterson works for Bedford County.
        “I am the procurement department,” she said when asked what her job is. “Right now I am trying to procure an Artisan Trail.”

  • Brooks Food Group announces setbacks; Mail America plans expansion

        While one area business was announcing this week that its local plant could close as the business restructures, another was announcing plans for expansion.
        Brooks Food Group, based out of Bedford, has closed its North Carolina plant and could do the same in Bedford. Meanwhile Mail America, based out of Forest, has announced plans to add 75 jobs over the next three years.

  • Artisan Cafe under new management

        The timing was perfect for Ron and Jennifer Siver.

        The couple were relocating to the area and were looking for a business opportunity. Karen Gorneau, meanwhile, was looking for a buyer for the Artisan Cafe. Gorneau has rheumatoid arthritis and needed to spend less time on her feet than running the business would allow.
        “We came here, walked in the door and we were sold,” Ron commented, noting that their first impression of the place was how bright and cheerful it was.

  • Longwood Industries survives by being flexible

        Agility is Longwood Industries’ key to survival, according to Renee Fisher, Longwood’s executive director. Fisher has served in that post since 1976.

        Fisher said that Longwood was incorporated in 1972, one of 40 sheltered workshops that were set up after Virginia deinstitutionalized people in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

  • Program focuses on opportunities area businesses have to offer

        A group of local business and government representatives gathered at the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) near New London, Friday for a breakfast presentation on the Bedford One Program. The program got started as an effort to provide local industry tours for county high school students.

        “Region 2000 provides lots of jobs,” said Michael Moorshead, formerly vice president of Barr Laboratories (now Teva). Moorshead serves on the steering committee that guides Bedford One.

  • The Bedford Columns opens its doors to public

        Those who visited The Bedford Columns Sunday discovered elegance at its best as they went from room to room in the remodeled dream-come-true for owners Brian and Vickie Runk.

        The Grand Opening of the event and conference center in Bedford was the culmination of an 18-month transformation for the historic building that last housed an assisted living facility.

        James and Ashley Fincher hope their business venture will be a success.

        It’s called Hope’s Diner, taking its name from their 13-month-old daughter and it occupies the building most recently used by Marcello’s.
