  • New massage therapist opens shop

    Getting a lay-off notice can be the nudge a person needs to make a positive change.

        Carol Patterson, a Bedford County native, had worked as an administrative assistant and executive assistant for 30 years. She had been wanting to do something more fulfilling and had thought about massage therapy for a year. Leaving the security of an existing job, however, kept her from doing anything beyond thinking. Then, her job was eliminated and, with job security gone, she “ took a leap of faith.”

  • Students learn what businesses do

    A joint venture among county government, the county’s public schools and local business seems to be paying off. Called Bedford One, the program works to show high school students what area businesses do.

        “It was wonderful that this happened on my watch,” commented Sue Montgomery at a business appreciation breakfast Tuesday morning.
        Montgomery retired as Bedford County’s director of economic development last year, but still does consulting work. She’s also still involved with Bedford One.

  • A-maze-ing

        P. W. Morgan is offering folks the opportunity to have some fun down on the farm.

        Morgan’s farm has a large pumpkin patch and a corn maze with 2,370 feet worth of trail winding through it.
        “I drew the design and I did it myself,” Morgan said of the maize maze.

  • Bedford General Store opens

    The building on North Bridge Street, formerly occupied by Guilded Era, has been a haven of activity since that business moved in June. Since then, a trio of local entrepreneurs have been at work on the interior getting ready to open the Bedford General Store.

        Bedford General Store, now open, is owned by Rachel Ellis, Linwood Hoffman and Dan Plattus. It’s actually several stores in one — the three rent out interior space to various small vendors, providing a variety of offerings.

  • Sedation dentist joins Bedford practice

    A new dentist, practicing sedation dentistry, has joined Dr. Anthony Bailey’s practice in Bedford.

        Dr. Rudolf Wolf, who hails from San Diego, Calif., joined Dr. Bailey on June 1. Dr. Wolf went to dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He liked Virginia, and got to know Dr. Bailey when he met him working at a free dental clinic in Lynchburg.

  • Woodhaven celebrates anniversary

        Woodhaven Nursing Home is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

        According to David Graves, the nursing home’s owner, the facility was founded in 1960 by Dr. John McCown. It’s always been at its current location, just west of Montvale on U. S. 460, although it has expanded substantially since then. The old house, built as a single family home in 1927, still forms its core and currently houses offices. At one point, in the 1950s, a company called Woodhaven Manufacturing operated there.

    Sam Moore Furniture is celebrating 70 years of making furniture.
        The company held plant tours, Saturday, as part of that celebration. West Wind, which performs a mix of southern rock and country music, provided entertainment.
