  • BCSO deputy, charged with DUI, terminated

        The investigator with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, arrested in Campbell County early Sunday morning, March 27, has lost his job with the department.

        Friday afternoon Sheriff Mike Brown said, following an internal investigation, Joshua Hubbard, 30, had been terminated from employment with the BCSO.

  • Man sought for passing bad checks in Bedford

    On March 17, an individual passed a fraudulent traveler’s check at a local CVS pharmacy. This person is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall in his late 20s with short hair. He was wearing a light colored shirt and blue jeans. There may have been another individual with this subject that stayed outside.

    Suspects may have left in a burgundy or maroon four-door vehicle similar to a Nissan or Infinity.

  • Mother found guilty of child abuse, not guilty on murder charge

    After a three day trial that concluded Thursday, a Bedford County jury found Cecilia Burnette, 26, of Bedford, not guilty of second degree murder. The jury, however, found her guilty of felony child abuse and recommended a sentence of eight years in prison.

  • Elmore sentenced to 30 years

        A Thaxton man will spend at least the next 30 years in prison for sexually molesting two pre-teen girls, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Krantz. Timothy Craig Elmore, 40, of Thaxton was sentenced last week in Bedford County Circuit Court.

        The crimes occurred in early June and Krantz said that Elmore was still on probation, after serving a little more than a year for a conviction of unlawful carnal knowledge with a minor in Franklin County in 2006.

  • Pongracz to have mental evaluation

        A 29-year-old Goode woman, accused of attacking her 77-year-old boyfriend last May at his home, will undergo a psychological evaluation before standing trial for first degree murder.

        Kristina Pongracz was indicted on the murder charge earlier this month by a Bedford County grand jury. Prosecutors decided to seek the murder indictment, in addition to her initial charge of aggravated malicious wounding, following the release of  the medical examiner’s report ruling the death of William Herchenrider in August as a homicide.

  • Cattle rustled from Moneta stockyard

        Cattle worth close to $11,000 were stolen from the Springlake Stockyard this weekend, according to authorities.

        The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the larceny of the 16 cows from the stockyard located at 1069 Sickle Court in Moneta. The sheriff’s office received the larceny report at 6:15 a.m. Sunday after an employee found the animals missing.
