    Three Liberty High School seniors helped their classmates look back at the past, take stock of the present and look ahead to the future as close to 200 seniors participated in the 49th Commencement as the Class of 2013.

    Next year’s sixth grade class at Big Island Elementary will be small, and likely combined with some fifth graders to fill out the class.
    Out of the 18 rising sixth graders, six of those have chosen to transfer to Bedford Middle School, leaving only 12 slated to remain at Big Island. But at last Thursday’s Bedford County School Board meeting a proposal to move all of the students to BMS failed.

    Bedford County Public Schools, and its students and employees, have been recognized on a number of fronts this past week as region honors have been handed out.

    Those have included several awards handed out to Liberty High School educators as well as an award to the school system for its internship program.
    The awards have included:
    • Thomas Fox:  STEM Educator of the Year for the region;

    The Bedford County School Board will look at two sites to construct a new middle school in the Liberty Zone as the result of action Thursday night.
    The board unanimously approved funding for studies of a site off Wheatland Road near the Bedford Area Family YMCA and for a yet-to-be identified site near Liberty High School, off Va. 122.
    The Wheatland Road site, located south of U.S. 460, is owned by developer George Aznavorian, who has offered to donate between 35 to 40 acres for the school.
