    Some 50 students from Moneta Elementary School found out Monday that math is more than a subject in school: It has real life uses!

    They did that by counting stacks of oranges, figuring out how much $20 could buy for a family meal and many other activities set up to encourage them to use math while exploring the Food Lion in Moneta
    The Math Night event was part of a school and business partnership pilot program being implemented this year through Bedford County Public Schools.

Some 100 middle school and high school students, along with their parents, gathered in Charlottesville in November for the fifth annual “I’m Determined” Youth and Parent Summit.

    The summit is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Partnership for People with Disabilities. The three day conference included topics such as transitioning from high school to college and tips on finding a job. The goal was to encouraging the teens to focus on their strengths, rather than their weaknesses.

    The EcoCAR 2 competition is an exciting challenge for Eli White, 2008 Liberty High School graduate and a mechanical engineering student at Virginia Tech. He likens it to working on a great puzzle.

    The club lacrosse team at Jefferson Forest High School will have to fall under guidelines set by the school system if a proposal to implement a club sports policy is approved by the Bedford County School Board.
    Assistant School Superintendent Dr. Cherie Whitehurst told board members Thursday that a policy is needed to provide guidelines for that program and any other club sports that might be implemented in the future.
