  • Public hearing Thursday on Liberty zone proposal

        Those wanting to comment to the Bedford County School Board on the proposed redistricting plan connected with the closing of Thaxton Elementary School may do so during a public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 11, at the School Board Office Conference Room.

        The board’s regular meeting will immediately follow the public hearing and included on that agenda is a vote on the redistricting plan.

  • Five times in six years

        Jefferson Forest High School (JFHS) may be getting used to this.

        Emily Pickering a senior and member of the school’s marching band has been selected to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. The band will play during halftime at the All-American Bowl to be played in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio on the first Saturday in January.  This game will feature two teams made up of the best high school football players in America.

  • 4-3 vote: close Thaxton Elementary

        On a 4-3 vote, the Bedford County School Board voted to close another school at the end of this school year; Thaxton Elementary joins Body Camp Elementary as the two schools slated to close.

        Before a packed room at the School Board Office Conference Room—and to the dismay of the Thaxton supporters attending the meeting—board members Gary Hostutler, Julie Bennington, Dr. John Hicks and Richard Downey voted to close the school with Kelly Harmony, Jason Johnson and Kevin Willis voting against the motion.

  • Update: SRHS lockdown lifted

    The lock down and subsequent evacuation of Staunton River High School students and staff today has been lifted following an extensive investigation and full campus canvassing by the Bedford County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police.

  • Graffiti threat leads to lockdown at JFHS

    Bedford County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers are investigating a threatening message found on a restroom wall at Jefferson Forest High School Monday around 1:50 p.m.

  • Individual affiliated with Thaxton Elementary diagnosed with TB

    An individual affiliated with Thaxton Elementary School has tested positive for tuberculosis (TB).

    The division was notified by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday following positive laboratory test results. A joint letter from Bedford County Public Schools and the Department of Health will be sent to all parents at Thaxton Elementary on Monday, October 13 that provides additional details regarding this situation.

  • Board won't reconsider closing Body Camp Elementary

        An attempt to get the Bedford County School Board to revisit plans to close Body Camp Elementary School—and possibly Thaxton Elementary—failed due to lack of support during Thursday night’s meeting.

  • Redistricting plan unveiled

    Bedford County Public Schools has released a proposed redistricting plan for students in the Staunton River attendance zone affected by the closing of Body Camp Elementary for the 2015-2016 school year.

  • Man enters FES, apparently steals teacher's credit card

    Bedford County Public Schools officials are working to increase security at Forest Elementary School following reports of an intruder who entered the school Sept. 19.

    According to school officials, an African-American man, bald and apparently in his 20s, went to the school and requested to have lunch with a first grade student.

  • Bedford professors teach criminology at LC

        Criminology is rapidly becoming one of the most popular majors at Lynchburg College, and two of the four professors teaching it live in the Thaxton area.
