Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) got a new face in workforce development this year.

    Dr. Ruth Z. Hendrick came on board in February as vice president for workforce development and continuing education. Her job is to work with companies to provide the worker training that they need. In this role, she will work with both existing businesses as well as new businesses that come into the area. She also looks for grants to pay for this.

    Last Wednesday, some 75 Bedford Elementary students walked to school—up hill, both ways, in a foot of snow.

    OK, maybe it wasn’t both ways and it was way too warm for snow.
    But they still walked as much as a mile and a half, and a good part was up a hill or two.

    Students at Bedford County high schools and middle schools have made a point this year of letting their classmates know the importance of being safe when driving or riding in vehicle.

    And those efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The students have won numerous awards this year through the Youth of Virginia Speak Out (YOVASO) campaigns.

    The submissions by two Bedford County students have earned them the right to represent their region at the  International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., next week.

    In the Engineering category, Stuart Robertson of Staunton River High School received first place and Grand Award honors at the Central Virginia Regional Science Fair—as well as the National Society of Professional Engineer’s Award for his project—entitled “The effect of fractal design on antenna capability.”
