  • Cheek won't seek re-election

        Roger Cheek is calling it quits after 18 years representing District 3 on the Bedford County Board of Supervisors.
        He’s the longest serving supervisor currently on the board, a status he said he never thought he would achieve when first elected.

  • Wilkerson to seek District 3 seat

        “It appears that way,” Steve Wilkerson said, when asked in a phone interview if he is running for the Bedford County Board of Supervisors District 3 seat.
        Yes, he’s running. He’s already turned in his preliminary paperwork to Barbara Gunter, the county’s registrar. He’s also secured the Republican Party’s nod, according to Nate Boyer, the Bedford County Republican Party Chairman.

  • BCEA: Pollard should apologize

        Two representatives of the Bedford County Education Association (BCEA) used the citizen comment period of Monday night’s supervisors’ meeting to criticize remarks that District 6 Supervisor Annie Pollard made during a meeting last month.
        Pollard, at the supervisors’ April 22 meeting, had referred to some county teachers as “a bunch of crybabies.”
        Cheryl Sprouse, president of the BCEA, called Pollard’s comments “very unprofessional and inappropriate.”

  • Town council elected

        May 7 was a big day for elections in the Bedford area.
        Bedford City residents decided which members of the new Bedford Town Council got full four-year terms while 19th House of Delegates District Republicans selected a candidate to run for the seat of Delegate Lacey Putney. Putney, who held that seat for 52 years, chose not to seek reelection this year.

  • Rec plans take shape

        Plans on how recreation will be handled in the soon-to-be-established town of Bedford are beginning to take shape. A transition period will be built into the planning process as the current recreation department is dissolved with the new program eventually falling completely under the direction of the Bedford County Department of Parks and Recreation.

  • Democrats to hold primary

        Democrats will hold a primary to select candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general.  The primary, which is open to all registered voters, will be held on June 11 with polls opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. People wishing to vote in this primary, which is tax-payer funded, should go to their regular polling place. The deadline for voting by absentee ballot is June 8.
        If you aren’t registered to vote, there is still time. The cut-off date for registering is May 20.

  • Supervisors approve bus facility

        David Halsey, who owns Grand Tour & Charter, will be able to build a facility for his tour buses in Montvale.
        The Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved his special use permit, Monday night, by a 6-0 vote. District 3 Supervisor Roger Cheek was absent. The planning commission voted 6-0 with 6th district planning commission member Derrick Noell absent.

  • Council to advertise tax rate of 30 cents

        When Bedford reverts to town status on July 1, town residents will pay both the county real estate tax of 50 cents per $100 of assessed value and a town real estate tax.

  • Rec changes coming

        Bedford County is poised to take over the city of Bedford’s Recreation Department, but at least one council member isn’t ready to turn it completely over yet.
        During a budget work session held last Tuesday, Councilman C.G. Stanley suggested there be a transition period over several months or even a year, before the town totally gives up that service to the county.

  • Town Council election is Tuesday

        Bedford will hold its first town council election in more than 40 years on Tuesday, May 7.
        This election will fill all seven seats in the newly elected governing body. Polls open, at the Bedford Central Library and the Welcome Center at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. according to City Registrar Randi Herrick.
        “This is a special election only for Council,” Herrick stressed.
