  • Business roundtables resume in this area

        Traci Blido, Bedford County’s new director of economic development, has resumed sponsoring business roundtables. The first of what she plans to be a quarterly event was held at Central Virginia Community College’s Bedford facility, Thursday.

        Blido presented statistics on the Bedford area. One was a list of the largest employers in Bedford County. While the top two were Bedford County Public Schools and Bedford County, the top five included TEVA Pharmaceuticals, Mail America and Georgia-Pacific.

  • Rogers steps into role as interim administrator

    Frank Rogers, who was appointed interim county administrator last week, isn’t new to the neighborhood.

        Rogers first came here as assistant county administrator in September, 2005. Prior to that, he had been special projects manager in York County. This was a catch-all position in which he managed several areas including housing and neighborhood revitalization, community services and the county’s financial unit.

  • Volunteer Fire Dept.'s may soon be able to bill insurers

        RICHMOND – Two bills moving through the General Assembly would authorize volunteer fire departments to charge homeowners’ insurance policies after responding to fire-related emergencies.
        One measure is House Bill 1202, sponsored by Delegate Joseph Johnson, D-Abingdon. It unanimously passed the House on Wednesday.

  • Board forces Guzi to resign

        Bedford County Administrator Kathleen Guzi announced her resignation Monday night at a special meeting called by the Board of Supervisors.

        District 1 Supervisor Bill Thomasson and District 6 Supervisor Annie Pollard had asked that the meeting be held to discuss Guzi, according to District 5 Supervisor Steve Arrington.

    Bedford County's planning commission members finished their comments, Monday night, on the Board of Supervisors' proposed changes to the county's zoning ordinance.

  • PC looks at updated comprehensive plan

    The city of Bedford Planning Commission reappointed Lonne R. Bailey as its chair during a meeting last Thursday.
        Also reappointed as vice chair was Jaimeson English.
        No one spoke at a public hearing on adoption of the comprehensive plan, prior to a vote to readopt the plan. The commission voted to recommend approval of the updated comprehensive plan. Should reversion of the city to town status be approved—currently set to take place July 1, 2013—the town would have to adopt a new comprehensive plan.

  • Bedford PD could see significant increase in calls

        Assuming reversion goes through—currently anticipated for July 1, 2013—the Bedford Police Department could see as much as a 40 percent immediate increase in the number of calls it responds to on an annual basis.
        But there aren’t any immediate plans to add officers.

  • Supervisors make appointments to Planning Commission

        The Bedford County Board of Supervisors filled two vacancies on the Planning Commission when it met in regular session Monday night.
        District 7 Planning Commissioner Curtis Stephens resigned at the end of last year. Stephens said that he did this in order to allow newly elected District 7 Supervisor Tammy Parker make her own choice. Parker nominated Jerry Craig to that position, with unanimous support from the other supervisors.

  • PC almost done with comments on zoning changes

        The Bedford County Planning Commission has just about wrapped up the task of commenting on the Board of Supervisors’ proposed changes to the zoning ordinance.
        The Planning Commission had 90 days after a November 2011 public hearing to respond. The clock runs out early next month, but the Planning Commission will have a final review and discussion on Feb. 6 before taking official recommending action on the proposed changes that will then be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors.
