  • Randy Krantz has served as commonwealth's attorney since 1995

        Randy Krantz is seeking his fifth term as Bedford County's Commonwealth's Attorney and like all but one of his previous elections, he is running unopposed.

        First elected in 1995—his only contested election—Krantz says he has been “very privileged” to have served in his position. “I get to do a job I love in a hometown I love,” he said.
        Not that it's always easy.

  • County treasurer, commissioner of the revenue run unopposed

        Both Faye Eubank, Bedford County’s commissioner of the revenue, and Rebecca C. “Becky” Jones, Bedford County’s treasurer, were their predecessors’ chief deputy before being elected to their respective offices. Both the commissioner of the revenue and the treasurer are constitutional officers. Eubank and Jones are both running unopposed this year.

  • Election '11 provides a number of contested local, state races

        Next Tuesday is the big day.
        Bedford and Bedford County voters will have the opportunity to go to the polls Nov. 8 and make decisions that will affect the make-up of the county’s board of supervisors and the school board. They will also decide who will represent them in the Virginia Senate and the House of Delegates.

        And there’s a contested sheriff’s race.
        There’s a lot at stake in this year’s election.

        Bedford County has a new director of economic development.

        Traci Blido’s first day on the job was Aug. 1. She’s been spending her time meeting with companies, learning about what their challenges are and what can be done to help them.

  • Supervisors approve hiring grant for deputies to investigate gang activity

        According to Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown, there have been signs of some gang activity in the area.

        With that in mind, the Bedford County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved accepting a federal grant Monday night, that will pay the salary and benefits for two deputies designated to investigate gangs. The resolution to accept the grant was originally part of the supervisors’ consent agenda but was pulled out for separate discussion at the request of District 3 Supervisor Roger Cheek.

  • Candidates speak on issues

        All candidates in contested board of supervisors elections, plus District 5 supervisor Steve Arrington who is running unopposed, turned out for a candidate forum sponsored by the Bedford and Franklin County Tea Party. A moderator posed questions for the candidates to answer. The evening ended with members of the audience having the opportunity to ask their own questions.

        All were asked why they are running.

  • Bill Thomasson challenges incumbent District 1 Supervisor Dale Wheeler

    The race for District 1 supervisor is a contested race with two candidates vying for the opportunity to sit in the hot seat.

        Dale Wheeler has held the District 1 supervisor’s seat for two decades. He’s seeking another term.
        “I’m not running against anyone,” he said. “I’m running for reelection.”
        He’s also running as an independent, something that he considers valuable.

  • Lacey Putney seeks another term

        Delegate Lacey Putney, currently the longest serving legislator in Virginia history, is seeking another term. If reelected, the opening of the General Assembly in January will mark the 50th anniversary of the day that Putney first set foot in the House of Delegates. He was first elected in 1961.

        Putney was born in Big Island. His father was  section foreman for the   C&O   Railroad   and   Lacey Putney grew up in the section foreman’s house.

  • Lew Medlin runs as Democrat

        He lives in Stewartsville and is vice-president of E-Z Mount Bracket Company, located in Montvale, which he co-founded with his father, Lewis B. Medlin Sr. The business has a 10,000 square foot facility that makes 23 different bracket designs used primarily by the electrical industry. The company has 15 U. S. patents.

  • Jerry Johnson runs as Republican

        Jerry Johnson, who lives in the Buchanan area, is challenging Delegate Lacey Putney for the 19th House of Delegates seat. Johnson is running as a Republican.
        A native of Atlanta, Ga., Johnson came to Franklin County in 1988. He has lived in Botetourt County since 2000. He is a retired building/electrical contractor.
