  • Senate plan puts Smith in Newman’s district

        A redistricting plan, under consideration by the Virginia Senate, would make substantial changes in State Senator Steve Newman’s district.

        “It is mostly my old district,” Newman said.
        Newman would still have Bedford County, and also get Botetourt and Craig counties. Newman said that Botetourt has 33,000 people and Craig County, with 5,000 residents, has a smaller population than the city of Bedford.

  • Supervisors say they won't support closing the school

        Dr. Douglas Schuch, Bedford County’s superintendent of schools, found himself in the hot seat at a Board of Supervisors meeting Monday evening.    
        After Julie Bennington, vice chairman of the school board gave the supervisors a rundown on the school budget, which includes closing Bedford Primary School, introducing a blended learning program and a 1 percent pay raise for school employees, District 1 Supervisor Dale Wheeler welcomed Dr. Schuch to “the wolf’s lair.”

  • Jones elected president of Fire Chief’s Association

    Jack Jones, Bedford County’s chief of fire and rescue, has been elected president of the Virginia Fire Chief’s Association.

        The 650-member organization attracts EMS chiefs, emergency services personnel and vendors associated with fire and safety related businesses as well as retirees.

  • On 4-3 vote, supervisors approve 3 cent increase

        The Bedford County Board of Supervisors voted, Monday night, to advertise a real estate tax rate of 53 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. This passed on a 4-3 vote after comments from the public and often passionate discussion by the supervisors. The 53 cent rate is an equalization rate, intended to bring in the same amount of revenue as the current 50 cent rate.

        One citizen, Don Barlow, asked the supervisors to raise his taxes.

  • Schools may get more local money from county

        Bedford County Public Schools may get more local money in the next fiscal year, after all.

        This assumes that the supervisors follow their past practice of equalizing the real estate tax rate and sharing half of additional discretionary revenue with the school division, which would increase the local transfer to the schools by $1.1 million.

  • Brown will seek one final term as sheriff

        “This will be my last run,” said Sheriff Mike Brown, when he announced last week that he will seek reelection as sheriff this fall. “It’ll be 20 years.”

        By 20 years, Brown means that when he leaves office in 2016 if he’s reelected in November, he would have completed 20 years in office. He was first elected in 1995 and took office in January, 1996.
