    Fifth District Congressman Robert Hurt stopped by the Welcome Center to talk with local business people on Jan. 30.

    Hurt, who was reelected to his second term in November, said that his district has geographically grown after the post 2010 census redistricting. He picked up three counties and the 5th District now stretches from the North Carolina border to include Fauquier County in the northern part of Virginia.
    “Rural areas are shrinking in population,” he said.

    Bedford County’s supervisors signed off, Monday, on a revised seven-district county map which will be presented at a public hearing in March.

    Bedford Police Officer Kenneth Burdette has created quite a stir amongst Facebook users.
    Sometimes it’s the little things people notice the most.
    Burdette, who has been with the BPD for two years, answered a call recently to the home of Ronnie Rice, who was injured in a car accident several years ago and now needs a walker to get around. Someone’s vehicle had gotten off the road and knocked Rice’s mailbox down.

Bob Wandrei will serve as Bedford’s mayor as the city rushes toward its reversion to town status later this year.

    Wandrei was unanimously elected mayor by his fellow city council members during a reorganization meeting last Wednesday. Skip Tharp indicated last November he wouldn’t seek reappointment as mayor, though he will continue to serve on council.
    Council also elected James Vest as vice mayor.
