  • School budget cut by $2.5M

The Bedford County School Board won’t get all the funding it was hoping to receive from the county. This means school board members will have to find cuts to their proposed $106 million budget.
Bedford County’s supervisors are proposing to transfer $38 million to the school division in the next fiscal year. In addition, they are proposing to hold $1 million in a general fund reserve, earmarked for future school division debt service.

  • Planning Commission looks at regs

After briefly revisiting the issue of allowing firearms sales in residential zones, the county’s planning commission turned to discussing private roads, corridor overlays and subdivision of agricultural land. The latter entailed considerable discussion and the commission preceded its regular meeting, last week, with a 5 p.m. work session to allow ample time.

In a brief Tuesday night meeting last week, Bedford City Council approved several resolutions in preparation for reversion.

  • Supervisors focus on choice of new county administrator

The search for a new Bedford County administrator should reach its conclusion early next year, approximately one year after former County Administrator Kathleen Guzi resigned.
According to District 3 Supervisor Roger Cheek, a consultant hired by the county has presented the board with a list of 10 candidates, narrowed down from a list of 41 applicants. Cheek said that the supervisors will narrow it down further, then conduct interviews.

  • Judges approve reversion

A three judge panel, consisting of Judge Pamela Baskerville, Judge Brett Geisler and Judge William Alexander, approved on Tuesday the reversion agreement between the city of Bedford and Bedford County.
Now it’s official: the city is set to become a town July 1, 2013.
The judges met in the Circuit Court courtroom; members of Bedford City Council attended. City Council had reconvened a meeting that it had continued last week.

  • County participates in earthquake drill

If you happened to be inside a Bedford County building last Thursday around 9:15 a.m. you probably saw employees crawling under their desks.

In fact, the goal, had you been there, was to have you take cover as well.
The county employees were participating in The Great SouthEast Shake Out, an Earthquake Preparedness Drill.

  • All US 460 lanes now open

The U. S. 460 eastbound lanes in the S-curve east of Montvale are now open.
The lanes have been closed since the evening of May 28 when a Watts Petroleum tanker truck rolled over in the curve, killing the driver. The tanker spilled 6,800 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel.  The fuel  soaked  into  the soil in the area of the roll-over, requiring a clean-up.

  • Agape Center granted tax exempt status

The facility that the Agape Center uses in Moneta will receive tax exempt status. The supervisors voted unanimously, Monday night, to grant this.
When County Attorney Carl Boggess presented the request to the supervisors, he noted that an important test for this status is that the organization gives back to the community more than the county loses in tax revenue. He said that the taxes on the building amount to $2,000 per year, but Agape clearly gives more than that back to the community.
