  • Eight alleged MS-13 members charged; allegations include murder of teen in Bedford County

    A federal grand jury returned an indictment on September 27 and it was unsealed Wednesday. The indictment charges the defendants in connection with a conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise known as the La Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. The indictments include charges associated with the death of a Lynchburg teen who was killed in Bedford County.

    Those indicted include:

    Carlos Roberto Tejada Cruz, a/k/a “Krusty,” age 20, of Beltsville, Maryland;

    Morning snow showers have started to fall through southwest Virginia and road conditions may continue to change and impact drivers over the next few hours. Virginia Department of Transportation crews have been attending to roads throughout the night and will continue to monitor and address road conditions today.

    The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a white man who shoplifted a bottle of alcohol from the ABC Store located in the Graves Mill Shopping Center on January 24, 2018.

  • VSP works two fatal crashes

        Virginia State Police Trooper N. J. Houck is investigating a single vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality.  The crash occurred Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6:22 a.m. on Route 723, one half mile east of Route 43 in Bedford County.
        A 2011 Dodge Caravan was traveling east on Route 723, when it crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the roadway striking several trees.

  • Mourning their loss

        Blesk was a friendly dog.

        He liked people; he loved to play ball; he was good at his job. And he carried a badge.
        Last week, members of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office mourned K9 Blesk’s passing, at the age of almost 15 years old.
        The loss was especially hard on his handler, Sgt. Kevin Hatcher.

  • Camp Jaycee to be sold

        Camp Virginia Jaycee is no more.

        The camp served high needs children and was the vision of Dr. William Robertson. Back in 1969, Dr. Robertson spearheaded a Jaycee fundraiser, selling jars of apple jelly for $1, that provided the money to build the camp.
        A Jaycee search committee selected a site in the western part of Bedford County and the camp was built. Between that time and 2014 it served 45,000 children. Its last year of operation was 2015.

  • VIRGINIA STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING FATAL BEDFORD COUNTY CRASH

    Virginia State Police Trooper N. J. Houck is investigating a single vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality. The crash occurred this morning at 6:22 a.m. (Jan 25) on Route 723, one half mile east of Route 43 in Bedford County
