    Virginia State Police Senior Trooper G. D. Musgove is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 8:33 a.m., February 2, 2017 on US 460, just east of Owens Market in Bedford County.

    BEDFORD, Va. – Virginia State Police Senior Trooper M. D. Mayhew is investigating a fatal crash which occurred on March 10, 2017. The crash occurred at 7:39 a.m. on Route 24, at its intersection with Joppa Mill Road in Bedford County.

  • Big Island VFD holds awards dinner

         Although the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department has been around since 1951, its awards banquet is a relatively recent event.

        The department has only been holding it for a few years. It grew out of a much older event, the ladies appreciation night. This was an event to thank wives for letting their husbands get out of bed at 3 a.m. to go put out a fire.
        “I’ll be back in a little bit and it’s eight hours later,” commented Deputy Chief Clint Dudley.

  • Update: Lockdown lifted at five Bedford County schools

    The lockdown of five Bedford County schools that were placed on lockdown this morning has been lifted, according to Bedford County Public Schools.

    The schools had been placed on lock down while a law enforcement investigation was taking place in the Forest Zone.

    Forest Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Elementary, Otter River Elementary, Forest Middle School and Jefferson Forest High were the schools on lock down.

  • Lake Christian Ministries exceeds expectations during Roanoke Valley Gives campaign

        “This is just an incredibly generous, gracious community,” said Lake Christian Ministries (LCM) member Jerry Hale about the Lake community.
         Hale along with several other members of the LCM provided refreshments, entertainment and assistance for donors during the Roanoke Valley Gives (RVG)  campaign day at Wainwright and Co. Relators in Moneta.

  • Driver killed in March 10 accident

        Virginia State Police Senior Trooper M. D. Mayhew is investigating a fatal crash which occurred on March 10. The crash occurred at 7:39 a.m. on Route 24, at its intersection with Joppa Mill Road in Bedford County.
        A 1993 Chevrolet Geo Tracker was traveling east on Route 24 and was slowing to make a left turn onto Joppa Mill Road. A 2005 Ford F-250, also traveling east on Route 24 crossed the double yellow center line, sideswiping the Chevrolet and striking a Bedford County School Bus which was traveling west on Route 24.

  • A busy day for area firefighters

        Bedford County firefighters were kept busy last Thursday afternoon and evening with three fires.
         The first one was called in at about 3:45 p.m. reporting a single-wide mobile home on fire on Unity Lane in the Chamblissburg area of the county. When fire units from Stewartsville-Chamblissburg, Moneta and Bedford arrived the home was fully engulfed in flames, with the fire extending into the woods and an adjacent mobile home.

  • Chamber holds legislative wrap-up breakfast

        In spite of scheduling its Legislative Wrap-up Breakfast on a cold Monday morning, that felt like February instead of March, the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce’s event saw a large turnout.

         Senators Steve Newman and David Suetterlein and Delegates Kathy Byron and Scott Garrett reported to the gathering on the recently concluded “short session” of the General Assembly.
