    Bedford County had six local elections this year — three for board of supervisors and three for school board. All six were unopposed elections.

  • Bulletin update: Thief takes knives from Terry's Country Store

    At 10:43 a.m. today (Friday) Bob Terry, owner of Terry’s Country Store, called the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and advised that a white male entered his store and asked to see the pocket knives. When Terry removed them from the case the suspect left the store. He then returned and grabbed several knives and left. Terry stated the suspect got into a dark colored 90s model Jeep Cherokee being operated by a white female. The suspect is described as a white male, 6 foot tall, 220 pounds and wearing a blue shirt.

  • Route 43 crash being investigated

    The Virginia State Police is continuing its investigation into a traffic crash this morning that occurred around 8:20 am on Route 43 just north of Route 838 Bedford County. The investigation revealed that 2003 Chevrolet Tracker which was traveling northbound on Route 43 crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Ford Taurus which was traveling southbound head-on.

  • Delegate Byron remarks on election results

    Delegate Kathy J. Byron (R-Bedford County) celebrated a victory this evening, winning her ninth term representing the 22nd District in the Virginia General Assembly. At a gathering of supporters at the Republican Victory Center on Leesville Road in Lynchburg, Byron delivered the following remarks:

  • Winter Storm Warning: LOW TEMPERATURES COULD CREATE SLICK ROADS THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT

    Road conditions could change as wet roads freeze and more precipitation moves through
    SALEM – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews across the state have been mobilized today to treat roads as a wintry mix of precipitation has been affecting travel.
    Most roads in VDOT’s Salem District are currently in clear or minor condition, which means they are mostly wet with isolated slick spots.

  • Bulletin update: Fire damages home on Longwood Ave.

    Crews from several area fire departments were still on the scene of a fire at 2 a.m. Sunday morning at 719 Longwood Ave. in Bedford, a fire that began late Saturday night.

  • Bedford County Department of Fire & Rescue units respond to two structure fires

    On Tuesday, January 7, at 1:38 p.m. a call was received for a residential fire at 1346 Union Church Road, caller advising smoke coming from the attic. Crews from Bedford Fire Department, Forest Fire Department, Montvale Fire Department, Stewartsville Fire Department, Shady Grove Fire Department, Bedford County Fire & Rescue and Blue Ridge Fire Departments responded.

  • Winter Storm Warning in Effect: VDOT Prepared

    With snowfall in southwest Virginia expected to begin before dawn this morning and continue into the evening, the Virginia Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel today until after the storm passes and road conditions improve.

  • Centra to purchase Carilion's interest in Bedford Memorial

    The Board of Directors of Bedford Memorial Hospital and Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center have endorsed a plan to transfer full ownership of the facilities to Centra in 2014.

    Since 2001, the 50-bed community hospital and 111-bed long-term care facility have been co-owned by Centra and Carilion Clinic. Carilion will sell its 50 percent ownership to Centra.
