  • Diversity provides strategic advantage

        Brigadier General Lapthe Flora was the speaker in the first of a series of talks at the Bedford Welcome Center, sponsored by the National D-Day Memorial, marking the centennial of America’s entry into World War I. Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the United State’s declaration of war on the German Empire.

  • Feature film has casting call

        The feature film Juanita, which will spend a week filming in the Bedford area, has put out a casting call for extras.
        Work in Bedford is expected to take place April 30-May 5.
        In the story line Juanita untethers herself from her exhausting life and sets out on a bus to an unknown destination and future. The film is based on the novel “Dancing on the Edge of the Roof” by Sheila Williams.     The  screenplay is by Roderick Spencer.

  • Montvale FD gets new pumper

        The Montvale Fire Department has purchased a new pumper, a brand new Pierce Rescue Engine with a tank capacity of 1,000 gallons.

        According to Montvale Fire Chief Scott Hawkins, the truck was bought through the county’s fire apparatus replacement rotation. The truck cost $520,000 and the county put up $260,000 of that amount. The fire department had to raise the rest. This price does not include the cost of the equipment the truck carries.

  • Exhibit marks centennial of US entry into World War I

        The Bedford Museum opened an exhibit this month that marks the centennial of America’s entry into World War I. The United States declared war on the German Empire, and its allies, on April 6, 1917.

        Grace Peterson, the Museum’s archivist and business manager, arranged the display, selecting items loaned to the Museum by Lee Anthony. Peterson said the greatest difficulty in setting up the exhibit was deciding what not to put in the limited space she had to work with.

  • Art show, auction to benefit Big Otter Mill

        Friends of the Big Otter Mill will hold an art show and auction to raise money to complete the restoration of the Mill.

  • 'Juanita to film in Bedford County

        The upcoming feature film Juanita, starring Academy Award-nominated actress Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave, Captain America: Civil War) and Petersburg native Blair Underwood (Agents of  S.H.I.E.L.D., L.A. Law), will film in Virginia this spring. 

        Adam Beach has also been confirmed as one of the film’s actors.
        The filming will include about a week’s worth of work in Bedford County.

  • Boys With a Dream plans autism awareness event

        Boys With a Dream will hold an autism awareness event in Bedford on April 29.
        It’s a 5K run and walk event. Signup is from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. with the run/walk taking place from 9 a.m. to noon. The course will follow the “loop.”
        According to Ta’Ron Robinson, the group settled on the loop because it’s familiar to local people who jog and walk. Robinson is a junior at Liberty High School and plans to go to James Madison University to major in computer science after graduating.

        Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and the American Pickers team are ready to return to Virginia to film  episodes of the hit series throughout central and southern Virginia in May.

  • Big Island VFD holds awards dinner

         Although the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department has been around since 1951, its awards banquet is a relatively recent event.

        The department has only been holding it for a few years. It grew out of a much older event, the ladies appreciation night. This was an event to thank wives for letting their husbands get out of bed at 3 a.m. to go put out a fire.
        “I’ll be back in a little bit and it’s eight hours later,” commented Deputy Chief Clint Dudley.
