  • Play to raise funds for school

    Bedford Christian Academy plans to roll a history lesson and a fundraiser into one this month.

    The Rev. Travis Witt, the pastor of Bedford's Lion of Judah church, is also the director of development for the non-denominational Christian school. The school has a board of directors consisting of pastors from several local churches.

  • Husband arrested in connection with Forest woman's death

    The husband of a Forest woman who died as the result of a gunshot wound in December appeared in Bedford County General District Court this morning in connection with the murder of his wife.

    After a lengthy investigation, Wesley Brian Earnest, 37, of Moneta was in court today for shooting his wife, Jocelyn Earnest, 38, of 1482 Pine Bluff Drive, Forest, at her home. He was being held without bond.

    Earnest was in court for the charge of the use of a firearm in the commission of committing first-degree murder.

  • Project will make news clippings available to the public

    A new project at the National D-Day Memorial Foundation will make a treasure trove of old newspaper clippings, available to the public.

    The collection of clippings were a pleasant surprise for the Foundation. A woman in Franklin County contacted Foundation workers and asked if they would like to have her mother's World War II scrapbooks.

    "I thought we were talking six or seven scrapbooks," said Shannon Brooks, the foundation's associate for research and publications.

    They received 16.

  • Quest Ministries taps into interest of local sportsmen

    There's no shortage of sports enthusiasts in Bedford County and Quest Ministries was established a decade ago at Palestine Baptist Church to reach out to them.

    The ministry continues to grow.

    This past weekend Quest Ministries sponsored its annual Wild Game Dinner with close to 1,000 area hunting and fishing sportsmen in attendance. It's an event that grows every year.

    "Our church family has just embraced it," said Rodney Dellis, about the Wild Game Dinner.

  • Big Island student wins county spelling bee

    Jackson Tomlin thought for a moment and then calmly spelled the word: "h-o-w-i-t-z-e-r."

    Bedford County, meet your new spelling bee champion.

    Jackson of Big Island Elementary School outlasted 16 other contestants last Wednesday to claim the county championship. As a result he advances to the regional contest next month in Roanoke.

    At first, Jackson said, his final word to win the spelling bee didn't register. "Then it just came to me," he said.

  • Elks National Home has been nominated for placement on the National Register of Historic Places

    Have you ever known a New Yorker that had never been to the top of the Empire State Building? Or a Philadelphian who'd never been to visit the Liberty Bell?

    Many folks often take for granted the historical landmarks of their hometowns.

    The leadership of the Bedford Historical Society wanted to make sure that Bedfordites didn't miss out on an opportunity to discover one of our architectural jewels. The Society hosted a presentation about and a tour of the Elks National Home this past Sunday.

  • Charges certified against former SRHS teacher

    A former Staunton River High School teacher, arrested in January for having a sexual relationship with a student at the school, will have four charges of taking indecent liberties with a minor while in a custodial relationship sent to a Bedford County grand jury.

  • Parents pack meeting chamber

    It was standing room only at Monday night's Bedford County Board of Supervisors Meeting, as representatives from a recently formed citizen's group voiced their thoughts on the upcoming school budget proposal.

    The group Concerned Parents for Bedford County brought plenty of supporters with them filling all seats, lining the walls and loudly applauding each speaker.
