  • Sixth graders may move out of BSTC

    Bedford area sixth graders, now holding classes at the Bedford Science and Technology Center, will likely be moved next year, probably to Bedford Elementary School.

    Bedford County School Superintendent Dr. James Blevins has asked the school board to consider moving second grade classes, currently meeting at the elementary school, to Bedford Primary School to free up space for the sixth graders to move to Bedford Elementary.

  • 'Skim and scan' to be added to selection process

    A committee looking into how Bedford County schools review books to be included in school libraries doesn't want to see its policy changed, but it does suggest adding another layer of protection ? a "skim and scan" approach.

  • Putney assumes role as chairman of Appropriations Committee

    Delegate Lacey Putney has taken on a new role in the House of Delegates.

    Putney, who has been the vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee is now its chairman. This committee is responsible for developing the House of Delegates version of the entire state budget. In addition, Putney said that all legislation regarding the Virginia Retirement System, and public employee pay and insurance goes through the Appropriation's Committee.

  • Staunton River High School ponders move to Blue Ridge District

    Staunton River High School has applied to leave the Seminole District in order to join the Blue Ridge. The move, if approved, would impact all VHSL sanctioned extracurricular activities. It would also break up the current configuration in which all Bedford County high schools are a part of the Seminole District.

    If approved, the move would take place for the 2009-2010 school year.

  • Election winners sworn in

    Generally, the people who appear before Bedford County Circuit Court Judge James Updike are in serious trouble. Monday was one of the exceptions.

    "It's nice to have a happy occasion in here," Judge Updike told a gathering of the winners of last month's elections.

    This was their swearing-in ceremony, a ceremony always conducted in circuit court. Judge Updike normally brings with him the newspaper photo of his first ceremony, when he was sworn in as Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney in 1979.

  • Well head protection, convenience store plans move ahead

    Both a well head protection overlay and a convenience store, both in the Hardy area, received the Bedford County Planning Commission's approval last week.

    Virginia Ridge Water Company, a private water company that serves the Virginia Ridge subdivision on Hardy Road, requested the well head protection overlay. This would restrict how parcels of land within 1,000 feet of each of its three well heads could be used. Certain uses, including fuel storage, are prohibited within 500 feet of the well head.

  • Two lose lives in separate accidents

    Two area residents lost their lives on Bedford County roads this past week ? one as a result of icy conditions on county roads Friday morning.

    Pamela Joyce Miller, 54, of Thaxton, was traveling south on Virginia 691 when she ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, according to Sgt. Bob Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police. The accident occurred at about 9 a.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Carpentieri said Miller was wearing her seat belt, adding that the single-vehicle accident was weather related.

  • Local group sends packages to Bedford soldiers

    Normally this time of year the Bedford Bunko Club meets for a cookie exchange.

    But not this year.

    Rather than sharing their goodies amongst themselves, the group members decided to sweeten the holiday season for Bedford area soldiers serving in Iraq.

    Last Thursday, the Bunko Club hosted a Christmas party for local military personnel serving overseas and, assisted by members of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church and other friends, 79 boxes filled with Christmas goodies and expressions of love to be sent overseas. They were expected to arrive in Iraq late this week.

  • Board approves driving range, condos

    A driving range and a condo project, recommended for approval last month by the Bedford County Planning Commission, received the final go ahead from the Bedford County Board of Supervisors Monday night.

    The driving range will be located on Va. 608, a short distance from its intersection with Va. 122. It will be right next to the site of a diner, already approved, and near a drive-in theater that is now under construction.

  • Former JF student pleads guilty to taking gun to school

    It doesn't appear as if John Thomas Hess Jr. will have to spend much, if any, more time in jail for taking a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun to Jefferson Forest High School last May.

    But what still remains to be answered is if Hess, now 19, will face a felony or misdemeanor conviction for the crime.
