  • Bedford Area Habitat for Humanity celebrates with first homeowner

        Linda Richie has come a long way in the past 25 years.

        In the fall of 1987, Richie found herself in what one would call a less than desirable situation.  Living in Washington, DC, Richie was separated from her husband and homeless, with three small children. 
        But instead of feeling sorry for herself, she decided that her family deserved better and put her mind to making things right.

        Last year more than 500 people packed the Liberty High School auditorium to watch the  United States Air Force’s Rhythm In Blue Jazz Ensemble concert. The group was scheduled for a return visit this Saturday, but that concert has been scrapped.

  • We have a winner—and it's not the coyote

    Bedford County’s Coyote Lottery ended on March 1 and the winner was announced with a ceremonial check presentation in front of Southern States, Friday. Ray Turpin, who turned in 30 coyotes, was the winner of the $2,000 jackpot. The money for the jackpot was provided by contributions from Bedford County Farm Bureau, Spring Lake Livestock Market, Powers Tractor, the James River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation, Boone Tractor, Creswell Custom Cattle and Holdren-Stanley Insurance.

  • Heart health focus of BMH brunch

        A heart health brunch, sponsored by Bedford Memorial Hospital, began on a light note with a performance by Elvis Presley, locally know as Taylor Rodriguez.

        Rodriguez, who is 15, isn’t old enough to even remember the 20th century at all, let alone Elvis. Nevertheless, his Elvis impersonation is so good that he’s headed for Graceland to perform this summer during the annual commemoration of Presley’s death.

  • BCSO makes arrests in Huddleston burglaries

    Update:

    Steve Croy and Tiffany Tolley were arrested late Friday afternoon. They were transported to the Bedford Adult Detention Center.

    Bedford County Sheriff’s Office investigators have arrested three suspects in connection with a series of business and residential burglaries in the Huddleston area of Bedford County.

  • Assistance dog 'Bedford' graduates

        Bedford, a black Labrador Retriever puppy selected for training in 2010 by the NEADS organization and sponsored by the GFWC Bedford Woman’s Club, has graduated after two years.

  • A lifetime of accomplishments

        Colonel Robert Cranston, of Huddleston, ended a long, accomplished life when he died at home Sunday night due to complications that followed heart surgery.

  • Local meteorolgist injured in Tuesday morning accident

    Jamey Singleton, a meteorologist with WSET Channel 13, was injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Moneta.
    According to Virginia State Police, Singleton, who is 34 and resides in Rocky Mount, was traveling north on Va. 122 in a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse when he crossed the center line and hit a Schwan's delivery truck head-on. He was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
    Leo George Jr., 56, of Moneta, the delivery truck's driver, and Joshua Ross, 34, a passenger in the truck, were taken to Roanoke Memorial by ambulance. All three men were wearing seatbelts.

  • Hearing brings out large crowd

        A crowd of about 150 people turned out for a joint public hearing, Monday night, before the board of supervisors and the county planning commission. The issue: proposed changes to the zoning ordinance.
        The hearing was moved to Susie Gibson Auditorium at Bedford Science and Technology Center to accommodate the turnout. Forty people signed up to speak, presenting arguments for or against the supervisors’ proposals.
