  • It's not just a Baltimore thing

There is nothing ?LAX? about the Lacrosse Program at the Forest Youth Athletic Association. In its second year, there are over 90 players on four teams including U13, U15, High School boys, and U15 girls.

The program is only in its second year, having spun off of the Blue Ridge Lacrosse club in Lynchburg, according to founder Victor Clarke. ?The popularity of the sport is growing like crazy,? said Clarke.

  • The importance of tax relief

In a letter written by Benjamin Franklin to Jean-Baptiste Leroy, Franklin said: ?In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.? Taxes may be a certainty for every American, but high taxes shouldn?t be. As you know, lower taxes put more money in the hands of consumers and are fundamental to economic growth. I believe Americans know better how to put their hard-earned money to use than the federal government.

  • VIPER attracts business

VIPER, the motor sports initiative at Virginia International Raceway (VIR), continues to develop into a potent economic engine for Southside Virginia.

  • Blues and BBQ

On Saturday April 19, Centertown Bedford came alive with the soulful sounds that only Blues Music can create in our Farmer’s Market.

Top blues performers, Minus John, Eli Cook & Band, Billy Sutton & Roadhouse entertained the crowd in the rain all night. Keith Campbell did a great job as emcee and filling in for our first musician who could not attend.

Taking care of pets, the county

I have been thinking of the ways you could increase the budget and maybe alleviate the pet (humane) population. I have been a pet owner all my life. Cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits. Here is my estimation on how to increase the revenue for Bedford and Bedford County.

Dogs - females that are used to breed more of their breeds - $20 fee or maybe even $25. They do sell these animals for a profit.

Dogs - a female mutt pet $15 or even $20 if spayed a total of $10 per dog.

  • The economic mess is downright scary

When it comes to the economy, I might have a little something in common with John McCain.

The Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee said sometime ago - another remark he now regrets - that he really didn’t know much about the economy. I have to say that I, too, don’t know as much about economic issues as I do other topics included in the vast realm of politics.

  • We need to build up our Navy

Once again, I find myself having to agree with a "Democrat." Not the one on the opposite side of this page from me. I'm talking about Senator James Webb.

  • Wise spending

This week the federal government was supposed to start sending U.S. taxpayers back some of their own money, through what has been touted as an economic stimulus tax rebate payment.

  • Montvale couple face drug charges

A Montvale couple is in jail on drug charges and their 2-year-old child has been placed in the custody of Bedford County Social Services following the couple's arrest Sunday.

  • Teachers to receive 4.25 percent raises

Though originally set at 5.8 percent, the Bedford County School Board still hopes a 4.25 percent pay raise for teachers approved Thursday will help make the school system's salaries more competitive with other area districts.

The board approved its $108 million budget on a 7-1 vote. District 3 board member David Black cast the dissenting vote, stating the raise was inadequate.

"We're just not doing it," he said of funding the needed increases.
