  • Cars and groceries

    Bedford’s Bank of the James branch staged its second annual car show in an effort to gather food for the pantry at Bedford Christian Ministries. According to Josie Arney, the branch manager, this year’s effort turned out to be even better than last year’s. People brought in a total of 290 pounds of food.

        “I enjoy working with them,” Arney commented about Bedford Christian Ministries. “They are nice people.”

  • Drive on Parkway proves fatal as truck plunges down overlook

        The Montvale and Bedford Volunteer Fire departments, along with park rangers, responded to an accident at the Quarry Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway Friday. A pickup truck had plunged over the side of the mountain and struck a tree, killing one occupant.

        “We were dispatched for a vehicle over an embankment with entrapment,” said Scott Hawkins, the Montvale fire chief.

  • Board looks at adding to sick leave bank options

        Bedford County’s school board is looking into letting school employees use time in the school division’s sick leave bank to care for an ailing family member.

        The sick leave bank is voluntary. According to Timothy Parker, the school division’s human resources director, the sick leave bank has 740 active members. An employee donates two days to join and may withdraw up to 90 days after all other forms of leave have been exhausted. Parker said that 800 days have been withdrawn from the bank, leaving a balance of 566.

  • Shepherd’s Table turns 20

        The Shepherd’s Table, which turned 20 this year, was born out of an idea to serve a Thanksgiving meal.

        According to Tom Foster, who has been involved with the Shepherd’s Table from the beginning, the late Campbell Morris and Pearl Broesamle got their heads together and decided to put on a Thanksgiving dinner for people in tough financial circumstances. Morris had a bakery located on South Bridge Street, near D. Reynolds. His bakery served as the location for that first dinner in 1989.

  • Local hero receives his Silver Star

        The action happened the night of Oct. 22, 1950, but it wasn’t until last Friday that the heroism was recognized. That’s when the Silver Star, awarded for gallantry in action, was finally presented to Bob VandeLinde of Moneta. The presentation took place at the National D-Day Memorial.

  • Health Department warns residents to make sure pets, livestock have current rabies vaccinations

    warn residents that a skunk the Department collected on July 11 from the Longwood/Oakwood/Greenwood Cemetery area tested positive for rabies.
