Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first observed in the wake of the War Between the States. Originally dedicated to decorating the graves of soldiers who died in that conflict, it expanded, after World War I, to include Americans killed in all wars. As Veterans Day honors those still living who served their country in uniform, Memorial Day remembers those who have passed away.

  • GOP primary candidates square off at Lake event

Three of the seven candidates, seeking the GOP nod to take on Congressman Tom Perriello, showed up at a town hall meeting held at Mariners Landing last week.

Ron Ferrin, Jim McKelvy and Mike McPadden showed up to take questions from Lake area residents. The town hall was sponsored by the East Lake Business Association.

Although many questions were local in nature, the three candidates sought to explain how broader federal  action,  where  a congressman  would  be involved, would affect these.
