CHAPEL HILL, NC —Treated municipal sewage sludge—the solids from sewage treatment—may be causing illness in people up to a mile from where it is spread on land, according to a recent study.
Those are the findings from researchers at the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health.

  • Bedford Area Habitat for Humanity celebrates with first homeowner

Linda Richie has come a long way in the past 25 years.

In the fall of 1987, Richie found herself in what one would call a less than desirable situation.  Living in Washington, DC, Richie was separated from her husband and homeless, with three small children.
But instead of feeling sorry for herself, she decided that her family deserved better and put her mind to making things right.

  • Guilty: First degree murder

Charles Edward Glover will spend the better part of the rest of his life—if not all of it—in prison following his guilty pleas to killing a Bedford County man last April.

Glover, 44, of Goodview pleaded guilty to the first degree murder of Reginald Perry Bowles on April 10, 2012, at Bowles' home on Jeters Chapel Road. Glover also entered guilty pleas to using a firearm in the commission of murder and arson.

  • School board looks at budget

After more than three hours of looking at the budget proposed by Schools Superintendent Dr. Douglas Schuch, the Bedford County School Board opted to stick with the majority of his budget as a draft plan to present to the Board of Supervisors this week.
That included a 3 percent raise for school employees, a commitment to funding technology and increasing the staff at the county’s middle and high schools.

  • Students let their love of art be known

Look around Centertown Bedford and you’ll notice banners hanging off the city lights promoting Youth Art Month.

Bedford County art students across the county were challenged to create a flag that would promote Youth Art Month, which is being celebrated this month.  A group of students under the direction of Lindsey Winfrey at Bedford Elementary won the elementary level and Laura Garbarini won from Liberty for the high school level.

  • Supervisors react to school budget proposal

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Douglas Schuch’s presentation of the school divisions’ 2013-2014 budget before the board of supervisors, Monday evening, drew a mixed reaction.
The problem some supervisors had with it is that it uses most of the extra money the school division will get next fiscal year from the state—due to Bedford’s reversion to town status—for operating expenses.

  • We have a winner—and it's not the coyote

Bedford County’s Coyote Lottery ended on March 1 and the winner was announced with a ceremonial check presentation in front of Southern States, Friday.         Some, such as the Bedford Volunteer Fire Department, drove to the school with their exhibit. One, Centra Health, flew in with its exhibit; the school grounds provided an open spot where one of Centra’s helicopter ambulances could touch down.
