I'm pretty much an Oscar Mayer guy.

But, as with just about everything else in life, my simple ways have been blown out of the water by progress.

  • Policy challenges: Syria, drones, and the NSA

In his second term, President Barack Obama is facing many diverse challenges, as all modern presidents have.
Most recent presidencies have either failed outright in the second term or met such obstacles that the leader’s “legacy” has been greatly affected.
In Obama’s case, it’s a combination of domestic and foreign challenges that, so far at least, is giving the president fits. This is frustrating to his supporters and encouraging to his enemies, who long so much for Obama to fail.

  • Obama kicks his lapdog

All through President Barack Obama’s first term, most of the mainstream media has served as his lapdog. The mainstream media is dominated by liberals and they’ve seen President Obama as their ideological soul mate. They’ve shown fawning obeisance to him, giving him a soft approach when they should have been asking him sharp questions. All he has to do is speak and they happily wag their tail and roll over on their back to get their belly rubbed.

  • We must continue to focus on job creation

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

At a time when high school and college students from Virginia’s 5th District and across the country are graduating and looking for career opportunities, one would think news headlines would focus on Friday's unemployment report and the continued weakness of our economy. Instead, our news is saturated with evidence of an overreaching federal government.

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

This past week, I traveled throughout Southside visiting communities along Route 58 to discuss the impact of high energy prices. After making over 30 stops, it is clear that 5th District Virginians continue to suffer from Washington’s failure to adopt a sensible energy policy.

  • Holding regulators accountable
  • Can you hear us now?

    t sounded good, didn’t it.
It’s going to help us catch all the bad guys; it will help us stop them before they do any more harm.
The Patriot Act will solve everything.
That’s what we thought we needed, in the days following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. At least some of us did.
But even the best of intentions can lead one down a road best left not traveled.
We found that out this past week.

  • Forest convenience store robbed

At 10:05 p.m. Monday night, Bedford County 911 dispatchers received a call from the Quik-E Food Mart in Forest reporting a robbery.

According to a report from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, the caller stated that a black male with black framed glasses, carrying a gray sweater and wearing jeans and a black T-shirt entered the store. He threatened the clerk and demanded money. After getting the money, the suspect left on foot and ran towards Graves Mill Road behind the store, the BCSO report stated.

  • A message for our graduates: Seek opportunity

A wise man named Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”  As high school and college students across the Sixth District don caps and gowns, walk across the stage, and accept a diploma, we are reminded of the great opportunities fostered by education and hard work.
