  • Veterans wives help, encourage one another

        A group of wives of Vietnam veterans started meeting at a restaurant in Lynchburg two-and-a-half years ago. Most of these women are caring for disabled husbands and the began meeting as a support group. Most of the husbands are combat veterans.

        “We are there to encourage one another,” said Judy Doering, who coordinates the group.
        The group grew and now meets at Lynchburg’s American Legion Post 16 on the fourth Thursday of each month.

  • LTP helps out with Cop Camp

        Little Town Players (LTP)  normally runs a theater day camp each summer. This year, according to Karen C. Hopkins, they aren’t able to do it, so they are assisting the Bedford Police Department with Cop Camp. The theater group made a donation of $500 to help the effort.

  • Jones convicted for 'upskirt videos' of 16-year-old girl

        A former church youth director pleaded guilty, Tuesday in Bedford County Circuit Court, to taking what Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Wes Nance termed “upskirt videos” of a 16-year-old.

  • BCEA: Pollard should apologize

        Two representatives of the Bedford County Education Association (BCEA) used the citizen comment period of Monday night’s supervisors’ meeting to criticize remarks that District 6 Supervisor Annie Pollard made during a meeting last month.
        Pollard, at the supervisors’ April 22 meeting, had referred to some county teachers as “a bunch of crybabies.”
        Cheryl Sprouse, president of the BCEA, called Pollard’s comments “very unprofessional and inappropriate.”

  • Rec plans take shape

        Plans on how recreation will be handled in the soon-to-be-established town of Bedford are beginning to take shape. A transition period will be built into the planning process as the current recreation department is dissolved with the new program eventually falling completely under the direction of the Bedford County Department of Parks and Recreation.

  • Car going wrong way on US 460 causes accident

    A North Carolina woman made what could have been a fatal mistake last week.

        According to Lt. Todd Foreman, of the Bedford City Police, Sergeant Robert Monk headed out on a report of an SUV driving the wrong way  on    U. S. 460 last Tuesday, May 7.

  • Studies will look at two sites for new middle school

        The Bedford County School Board will look at two sites to construct a new middle school in the Liberty Zone as the result of action Thursday night.
        The board unanimously approved funding for studies of a site off Wheatland Road near the Bedford Area Family YMCA and for a yet-to-be identified site near Liberty High School, off Va. 122.
        The Wheatland Road site, located south of U.S. 460, is owned by developer George Aznavorian, who has offered to donate between 35 to 40 acres for the school.

  • Town council elected

        May 7 was a big day for elections in the Bedford area.
        Bedford City residents decided which members of the new Bedford Town Council got full four-year terms while 19th House of Delegates District Republicans selected a candidate to run for the seat of Delegate Lacey Putney. Putney, who held that seat for 52 years, chose not to seek reelection this year.

  • Democrats to hold primary

        Democrats will hold a primary to select candidates for lieutenant governor and attorney general.  The primary, which is open to all registered voters, will be held on June 11 with polls opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. People wishing to vote in this primary, which is tax-payer funded, should go to their regular polling place. The deadline for voting by absentee ballot is June 8.
        If you aren’t registered to vote, there is still time. The cut-off date for registering is May 20.

  • Public comments on new school sites

        The Bedford County School Board is still looking at the possibility of constructing a new middle school near Liberty High School, but it appears any possibility of building the school on the current LHS site is gone.
