The Commodity Markets Transparency and Accountability Act received a majority vote in the House of Representatives, but it failed to pass, because it was brought up on what is known as the suspension calendar. A bill brought up on suspension must have a two-thirds majority to pass. I voted for the bill and hope that it will be brought back as a regular order of business.

An eight-bout boxing card this Friday evening will feature some local talent, as Scott Sigmon will take to the ring in a light heavyweight bout.

Sigmon, a graduate of Staunton River High School, will go up against Daniel Shull in a fight on the undercard of the Andrew Farmer-Cesar Vega light welterweight fight.

This will be Sigmon’s third pro bout, having split his first two fights. Shull will be battling for the fifth time.

The Bedford Christian fellowship wishes everyone in our community to recognize that drug abuse remains a serious problem in Bedford and across the nation.

The local statistics are eye-opening. The 2004 Bedford City/County Youth Survey Report showed 12.1 percent of Bedford County Public School District students used marijuana and another 7.6 percent used other illegal drugs. By the time they reached 12th grade, 44.8 percent of Bedford County Public School students had tried marijuana and 7.6 percent had tried cocaine. Over 21 percent of 8th graders have tried inhalants.

Both the "Democrats" and Republicans have chosen the best nominees they could from the field of candidates they had from which to chose.

Of course, neither John McCain nor Barack Obama have been officially nominated by their respective conventions. However, the party conventions are nothing more than a lot of choreographed nonsense made for TV. These two guys are the nominees.
