        Anyone who has driven or walked through the Centertown Park area of Bedford the past few months has been able to enjoy the efforts of a number of students from the high school who have spruced up the Park with decorations.
        The effort shows initiative, hard work and community spirit. That’s something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

  • LHS students decorate Centertown Park

    Liberty High School students decorated Centertown Park for this past Christmas, and now a different group from the high school has decked the space out for Valentine’s Day.

        According to Leslie Padgett, the high school’s art teacher, Cindy Key, a special education teacher, came to her and noted the good community response to the Christmas decorations. She asked if the special education students could do something in collaboration with the art department.

  • Trial related to August shooting delayed

        Dennis Caldwell’s day in court to answer charges stemming from a shooting last summer, will be delayed. Judge James Updike agreed to the delay after Caldwell’s defense attorney appeared in Bedford County Circuit Court, Tuesday, to ask for a continuance.

  • Charge reduced to abduction

        When Ryland Elton Lee Jr., 51, of Bedford County had his day in court, Tuesday, he faced a reduced charge of abduction. He pleaded guilty to that charge.
        Last summer, on Aug. 13, Lee was charged for allegedly raping a female acquaintance in the county’s Body Camp area in the early hours of Aug. 13 or late on Aug. 12. In a plea agreement worked out between the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and Lee’s defense attorney, William Walker, Lee agreed to plead guilty to the abduction charge.

  • School budget hearing is Thursday at BSTC

    Local residents will have their first official opportunity to speak to the Bedford County School Board about the 2012-2013 budget at its meeting this Thursday.
        A public hearing on the budget will be held at 7 p.m. at the auditorium of the Bedford Science and Technology Center.
        But this won’t be the first time board members or school officials will have actually heard from the public on the budget. Numerous meetings with PTAs, teachers and civic groups have been going on for months.

  • Fire department looks back on busy year

        The Bedford Volunteer Fire Department looked back at a busy year and honored the people who made things happen. A special thanks went to one person who, although not a member of the fire department, has provided a valuable service to Bedford’s firefighters.

        “She takes care of all of our sewing,” said Bedford Fire Chief Brad Creasy as he handed a plaque to Ruth Crouch.

  • Book pulled from Forest MS library after complaint

        The book “Running with the Buffaloes” has been pulled from the shelf at Forest Middle School following a complaint from a parent of a student at the school.

  • Navy SEAL team rescues woman with Bedford ties

        The last two years have been a rough time for John Buchanan.

        Buchanan and his wife moved here from Ohio a few years ago. He is a furniture maker and restorer and they were looking for a place to semi-retire. They loved the mountains, they loved Virginia and settled in the Bedford area.
        Then, in 2010, his wife died. He was still trying to adjust to that when his daughter, Jessica, was kidnapped by Somali pirates in October, 2011.

  • Local couple hopes to open new winery

        Bedford County could get a new winery if James and Sandra Ramaker have their way.
        The Ramakers currently have five acres of wine grapevines on Hendricks Store Road, in the Smith Mountain Lake area of the county.  Their entire 101-acre parcel is currently zoned residential, and the Ramakers want it rezoned agricultural village. This will allow them to make wine and have a wine tasting room.
