  • Body found at bridge

    Three people charged with killing Sean Peter Placko late this winter and dumping his body in the James River faced a preliminary hearing in Bedford County General District Court, Monday. Although the murder allegedly occurred in Augusta County, Bedford County has claimed jurisdiction because the body was found near the Snowden Bridge in Bedford County.

  • Getting the big wheel rolling

    Big Otter Mill is one step closer to having a functioning mill wheel again.

        Workers from Water Wheel Factory welded buckets back in place on the mill’s massive water wheel, Saturday.
        There’s still a lot of work to be done, notes Richard Burnett, the Big Otter Mill foundation’s treasurer. Now, the gearing inside the wheel has to be replaced.
        “That thing has a huge internal gear,” Burnett said.

  • Murray will replace Hubbard on Council

    Guy E. Murray Jr., a long-time businessman in Bedford, has been selected by City Council to fill the council seat left vacant by the resignation of Jeffrey Hubbard last month.
        Murray was one of five applicants for the position interviewed by council at its meeting last Tuesday. The announcement was made at the end of the meeting.

    Hickory Grove UMC celebrates 50th anniversary
    Hickory Grove United Methodist Church will hold its 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 3. Saturday’s festivities begin at noon with dinner at 12:30 p.m. followed by special music and games for children. The Golden Anniversary Service will be on Sunday at 9 a.m. While Hickory Grove United Methodist Church has existed as a congregation for over 100 years, this 50 Years of Faith and Fellowship event is a celebration of the church building where members worship today.

I have often said that there are no shortcuts to regaining our competitive advantage, so at this moment, while we recover from our current economic downturn, we know that we must be providing educational opportunities that will prepare our current and future workforce for the jobs of tomorrow.

    Nine years ago, Americans looked on in horror as the events of September 11th unfolded.  At the end of the day the skyline of one of our greatest cities was forever changed, the Pentagon, a symbol of America’s military strength was still smoldering, and a previously indistinguishable field in western Pennsylvania had suddenly and terribly become an unmarked grave for America’s newest heroes.
