  • Montgomery stepping down from BCSO

        Tom Montgomery, the bailiff in Bedford County General District Court, called it quits, Friday, retiring after 20 years with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office.

        Montgomery originally joined the Sheriff’s Office as a road deputy. Prior to going to the courthouse, Montgomery served as part of the regional homicide squad, which worked on especially difficult murder cases. He became a bailiff just after the turn of the century.    

  • A one-act success story

        As far as Peter Feagans is concerned, Theatre students at Jefferson Forest High School are carving out their own legacy.

        Feagans is among those in Spence White’s third period acting class who claimed the Region III championship Nov. 10 at William Byrd High School. JF’s one-act version of The Rimers of Eldritch beat out performances by Turner Ashby and Harrisonburg high schools, last year’s winners.

  • Season's events are up and running

        They began lining the streets early. By noon, Centertown’s sidewalks were full of Bedford Christmas Parade watchers.

        It was a perfect day as Bedford capped off its official kick-off to the Christmas season.
        Utilizing the theme, “A Blue Ridge Christmas,” a good mix of floats, bands and other units made their way through Bedford, passing out candy and spreading Christmas cheer.
        Awards were also on the line for some.

  • Tharp to step down

        Bedford Mayor Skip Tharp told City Council last week he will step down from his duties as mayor at the end of this year.

        "I've thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it," Tharp said of his service as mayor. But now he's ready to step aside and let someone else lead the way.

  • Fire engine overturns

        Four firefighters were injured in an accident Saturday morning as they were responding to a call just prior to the Bedford Christmas Parade.

        At 11:52 a.m. Bedford Fire Department’s Engine 1 was involved in a single vehicle motor vehicle accident while en route to a reported brush fire  in  the 4100 block of Peaks Road.
        The call occurred just before the noon start of the parade.
