  • Big problem at Big Otter Mill

        Big Otter Mill, located on Va. 122, north of Bedford, has a big problem. A big tree, felled by a storm over the weekend, is partially blocking the point where the mill’s mill race enters the Big Otter River.

        The storm came through Saturday night.
        “We got between seven and eight inches of rain,” said Becky Wuergler, a member of the Big Otter Mill Foundation’s board of directors who lives less than three miles from the mill.

  • Superintendent: AYP results becoming less relevant

        Six Bedford County schools reached their adequate yearly progress goals for last year; 15 did not. The results reflect a nationwide trend that has more schools failing to meet increasing federal requirements that many say have to be revised.

        “I have a lot of concerns about the No Child Left Behind law as it is currently written,” stated Bedford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Douglas Schuch.

  • Students head back to school

    While summer won’t officially be over for another month, it practically ends for about 10,300 Bedford County students Monday.

        Summer vacation is through—the 2011-2012 school year is set to begin.
        “We’re just excited to have the students back,” stated Superintendent Dr. Douglas Schuch. “We’re very excited and enthused about another school year and all of the great things we have in store for the students in the year to come.”
        And there will be changes.

  • Feud between brothers turns violen

    Virginia State Police and Bedford County Sheriff's deputies are on the scene at Haven Heights Road, approximately two miles west of the city of Bedford, responding to a shooting.

    A brother allegedly shot his brother and his brother's son, the result of a feud that neighbors say that has been going on for several years. One neighbor said that they were always at each other's throat. The mother of one of the men shot said the brothers have been to court several times over the feud.

  • Multiple shootings - alleged shooter still at large

    Virginia State Police and Bedford County Sheriff's deputies are on the scene at Haven Heights Road, approximately two miles west of the city of Bedford, responding to a shooting. Multiple victims are being airlifted. The alleged shooter is still at large. Both sides of U. S. 460 are currently closed.
