  • Tri-county committee unhappy with AEP management plan

    The application from American Electric Power (AEP) for renewal of the operating license for the Smith Mountain Project has been forwarded and accepted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

    As many of you know, the Tri-County Re-licensing Committee (TCRC) is not satisfied with the level of detail in each of the management plans submitted with the application for the stewardship of the lakes. TCRC’s concerns have been sent to AEP and FERC. It is our understanding that FERC will be asking AEP for additional information to expand the application.

  • Bedford gives warm welcome to Special Olympics athletes

    Let me win. But, if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

    Winners abounded this past weekend as Bedford was the site of the 15th annual Special Olympics Softball Tournament of Virginia.

    The tourney, hosted by Bedford's Moose Lodge, featured 30 teams from across the state. Games were played all over the county as rec leagues made room on their schedules, clearing their fields for their ball-playing brethren.

  • A half-century of service

    Bedford Memorial Hospital has been around for 53 years. Nelson Hurt has worked there for all but three of those.

    Last week, at an employee awards lunch, the hospital honored Hurt for 50 years of service. Hospital Director William Flattery presented him with an engraved watch in a presentation box with a plaque. Hurt received a standing ovation from his fellow employees as he went forward to receive it.

  • Moose team up with Safe Surfin'

    For several years the Safe Surfin' Foundation has been looking for a national organization to partner with it to promote Internet safety for children.

    Last Friday, that partnership was announced.

    Moose International, a 1.2 million member organization, has joined with the Safe Surfin' Foundation in its quest to educate youth about the danger of the Internet. Safe Surfin' is the educational arm of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, known as Blue Ridge Thunder, a unit based out of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

  • City looks at raising real estate tax rate

    The funds the city of Bedford pays to Bedford County for services such as schools and Social Services are going up at "an alarming rate," City Manager Charles Kolakowski stated in a letter to city council about the upcoming city budget.

  • Church plans move ahead

    Bedford County's planning commission, Monday night, unanimously recommended a proposal by EastLake Community Church to build a new facility on Hendricks' Store Road (Va. 655).

    The new church facility will be on 10 acres of a 22.75 acre tract across the road from the Sunset Cay development. The zoning of that parcel requires religious assemblies to get a special use permit before building.

    Local couple live through quake

    On May 12 a 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked China, killing more than 34,000 people. Among those who were there was a couple teaching English with local ties to Bedford.

    According to area resident Cindy Connor, Rebecca Stormer lived here in Bedford and taught at CVCC, as well as being a local artist. Her husband, Richard Hartley worked for Bedford County and Roanoke City schools until he retired. He is from Rocky Mount. They moved to China in August to teach English and were 30 miles form the epicenter of the quake.

  • New SRHS principal visits with faculty

    Robert Stump is ready to become a Staunton River Golden Eagle.

    Stump visited with faculty, staff and students recently after being named as the new principal of the school.

    He will officially take on his new duties July 1, but the transition has already begun.

    Stump told the SRHS faculty, during a meeting held May 14, that he wanted to help them use every bit of the strengths they have in educating students.

    "This is what I want to do," he said of getting ready to assume his new position.

  • Law targets child sex predators

    A young Pennsylvania woman is getting the perfect revenge for something that happened to her six years ago.

    Alicia Kozakiewicz was 13-years old when she disappeared on New Year's Day, 2002.

    "She disappeared between dinner and dessert," her mother, Mary Kozakiewicz recalled.

    Alicia had been lured to meet somebody she met on the Internet, an Internet predator who kidnapped her, brought her to Herndon, where she was kept chained in a basement and tortured for four days.

  • Okuley Group moves to Centertown

    A new independent full service investment firm has opened in Bedford.

    Although the Okuley Group, located at the corner of East Main Street and North Bridge Street in Bedford, held a grand opening a few weeks ago, the firm actually opened for business in January. It's not brand new, either. It's been around for 10 years.

    "We like it here," commented Mike Okuley, the firm's owner. "Our kids go to school here, they play sports here."
