  • Liberty, River diamondmen fall

    One baseball game was a pitcher?s paradise. The other was a batter?s bonanza. Both ended in defeat for county teams.

    Liberty hosted, and was topped, 1-0 by Amherst while Staunton River visited, and was beaten, by Heritage 9-8.

    The Minutemen and the Eagles have the rest of the year to reflect on the games, as the losses eliminated them from further tournament play. Top-seeded Jefferson Forest is the only local team still in the running.

  • County softball roundup

    The Lady Cavs won?t be hauling the trophy for a regular season softball title back to Forest this season. Brookville will have that distinction.

    Just because JF won?t have the hardware, it would be unwise to count them out of the post-season dash. The team, currently tied with Amherst for second, showed it can play some superior softball. The Lady Cavs put on quite a demonstration in beating homestanding Liberty 3-0 this past Friday.

    Along with the usual pitches for ?free? software and pleas from the widows of Nigerian multimillionaires for my bank account number, I received an interesting e-mail in my inbox today.

    The note was a press release on behalf of the ?Innocent Olympic victims,? those athletes who competed (and won) on relay teams that included Marion Jones, during the 2000 Sydney Olympic games.

    Jefferson Forest continued with its season-long formula of using young arms along with graybeard fielders and hitters to top Liberty by the score of 9-2 last Friday night.

    With the win, the Cavs kept pace with Heritage for the coveted regular season crown. Along with the title comes a first-round bye in the District tournament and an automatic bid to the Region III playoffs.
