    Naturally, when we face economically trying times, the social safety nets become ever more important.

        With people losing jobs and companies cutting back on hours and benefits, obtaining health care becomes more of a concern.  Oftentimes, illness or injury can be the straw that breaks a family’s financial back.

        That’s where places such as the Bedford Christian Free Clinic (BCFC) and the Free Clinic of Central Virginia (FCCV) can offer help.

    Bedford County’s supervisors voted, Monday night, to set up a broadband authority.

  • Who shot Slick?

    Somebody shot one of Anne Ferrell’s best friends a few weeks ago.

        This particular friend is a young dog named Slick. Slick is an all black short-haired mutt who’s name came due to her short, smooth fur according to her son, Billy Ferrell.

    We don't envy the folks on the county's school board, Bedford City council or Bedford County's supervisors. Perhaps some of them are wondering why they volunteered for these jobs. Are they really glad they were elected or reelected?

        The seats they are now sitting in are certainly hot seats. No matter what they do, they are going to make somebody mad.

  • Smoking ban

    The possibility of a smoking ban in bars and restaurants got varied reactions in Bedford.

        The measure under consideration in Richmond by legislators would outlaw smoking in restaurants and bars unless they build an enclosed area with a separate ventilation system for the smokers.

  • '09 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show winner bred by local woman

    Dee Duffy knows Stump, the winner of this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, well. She’s one of his breeders.

        The Montvale resident was in Indiana on Dec. 1, 1998, when Stump was born and she watched with tears in her eyes Feb. 10 as the Sussex Spaniel was named “Best in Show” at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, outclassing some 2,500 other champion dogs for the title.
