  • Man accidentally shoots himself, wife at gun safety class

    What started out as a gun safety class Saturday ended up with two people hurt in an accidental shooting.

     About 12:25 p.m. Saturday, the Bedford County 911 Communications Center received a call reporting a shooting at a residence at Chapel Woods Drive, Bedford. Bedford County rescue units and deputies responded to the scene.

    What they found was that two people, a husband and wife, had been shot by a single bullet.

  • DMV 2 Go launches service in Bedford Wednesday

    The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ mobile customer service center, called DMV 2 Go, will offer service at the Bedford County Welcome Center, located at 816 Burks Hill Road, on Wednesday, April 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Editor’s note: Last week’s editorial that listed the spending per pupil by the school districts in Virginia generated quite a bit of reaction from our readers.         Table 15 of the Super-intendent’s Annual Report of Virginia seems to be getting a lot of attention over the last couple of weeks. 

  • Study: Conservatives are lazy thinkers


    Conservatives have always been irritated by studies that show that people who have a good, solid formal education tend to be more liberal than those who aren’t very well educated.
        Simply put, people with more education seem to find out the value of an old saying: The more you know, the more you realize what you don’t know. Knowledge is good and is not to be feared.

        It looks like Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican nominee for president. Rick Santorum threw in the towel last week, suspending his campaign.

  • Tech team visits Bedford schools

        Members of Virginia Tech’s EcoCAR 2 team paid a visit to Bedford Middle School and Liberty High School (LHS) earlier this month. EcoCAR 2 is a college engineering competition that challenges college students to modify a production GM car to make it more energy efficient. Each competition takes two years and consists of a design phase and a building phase. Tech, was the national winner last year and will be defending its title at the end of next year.
