  • Boys' hoops District standings firm up

    Brookville completed its stranglehold on first place in the Seminole District. The only question for the Bees, at this point, is whether they will run the District gauntlet in undefeated fashion. The smart money says they will.

    Brookville has assured itself of a first round bye in the District tourney and an automatic first round game in the Regional. Liberty, which settled for second place when it lost 83-66 to Brookville, is only assured of a home opener in the Districts, most likely against Staunton River.

    Working to reduce government waste is a significant undertaking and one to which I remain firmly dedicated even in a Congress where excessive spending runs rampant. It is critical to ensure that the Congress responsibly manages federal spending, especially our tax dollars, to fund our nation’s priorities through greater transparency and accountability. That is why I have worked to rein in wasteful and unnecessary spending by voting for the tightest budgets offered and supporting reductions in overall government spending.

  • Bill increases taxpayer liability for illegal immigrants

    Once again, the issue of the huge expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) came before the U. S. House of Representatives. For the fourth time in this Congress we had a vote on whether to expand the income guidelines by at least 50 percent for the SCHIP program and to significantly weaken the citizenship requirements for SCHIP. The issue is one of great expansion and not re-authorizing the existing program, which has already passed.

    I don't know what the results of Super-Duper-Ohm'gosh! Tuesday will be as I write this. We go to press on Tuesday afternoon and folks are still voting around the country as we transmit our pages to Roanoke. Nevertheless, I will hazard a prediction: nobody will come out of the Feb. 5 slate of primaries with a headlock on their party's nomination. This means you really ought to vote in Virginia's presidential primaries.

  • Double talk

    Every now and then our readers take offense at something said, or not said, in the pages of the Bulletin — or at some injustice they perceive that has taken place in the community.

    When their ire is raised enough, they sometimes choose to call or write a letter to the editor and state their case. We certainly have seen that recently with such issues as the hospital's choice to stop funding a local pediatrician, with the Oakwood Villas development and with last November's sheriff's race.
