  • Montvale student wins County Spelling Bee

    For eight rounds Rhiannon Cire of Montvale Elementary and Brandi Mitchell of Forest Middle School squared off against one another in last Thursday’s Bedford County Spelling Bee.

        Seventeen students from the county’s middle and elementary schools had started in the contest, but by the seventh round it was down to those final two.

  • Earnest receives life sentence

    There weren’t any real surprises, but the importance of Tuesday morning’s sentencing hearing in Amherst County Circuit Court wasn’t lost on anyone there.

        Life in prison — plus three years.

  • A century in Montvale

    Montvale honored a life-long resident, Monday, on her 100th birthday.

        Virginia Noell was born on Jan. 25, 1911, and grew up on a 230-acre farm in Goose Creek Valley, a daughter of the late Royal and Hattie Boyd Garrett Noell.
        “I loved it!” she said of her early years. “You could run, do anything you wanted and nobody would run over you with an automobile.”

  • Bedford Humane Society offers free service for pet owners

    Missing a pet? Now you can do more than just put up signs in your neighborhood.

        The Bedford Humane Society has established a service for helping lost pets find their homes.
        Area residents can call Sunshine Richards, the BHS office manager, on the Lost and Found hotline, at 540-425-0784.

  • Arrests made in New Years Day larceny

        The Bedford County Sheriff's Office has arrested  two men in connection with the larceny of items from a vehicle at Sheetz in Bedford County.  
        On January 1 at about 2:45 a.m. deputies responded to Sheetz at 14449 Forest Rd. in Bedford County.  Upon arrival deputies learned that a gun and some other items had been stolen out of a vehicle in the parking lot while the owner was inside. 

  • Bedford Most Wanted:

        The Bedford Police Department has warrants for Detrick Cordell Price for felony domestic assault and preventing another from calling police. 
        He is also wanted in the city of Roanoke for trespassing.  Price is 38 years of age and is 6’ tall, 160 pounds with slender build.  His last known address was Cook Street in the city of Bedford.

  • BCSO makes meth arrests

    Vice investigators with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office have arrested two people who were allegedly in possession of a mobile methamphetamines lab, according to a report from the Sheriff's Office.
