  • Flash drive brought to school leads to child pornography charges

    A flash drive that was plugged into a computer at Liberty High School has led to six counts of possession of child pornography against a Bedford man.

    David Shannon Caldwell, 24, was arrested earlier this month on the charges, following indictments handed down by a Bedford County Grand Jury.

  • Former school employee faces embezzlement charge

    A former New London Academy cafeteria employee faces an embezzlement charge in connection with money taken from the school nutrition fund.

    Barbara Allen Wilson, 51, of Goode, faces one charge for taking in excess of $200 from the school during the time period Aug. 25, 2007, to March 31, 2008.

  • Tattoo parlor approved

    Bedford City Council approved a conditional use permit, at its Tuesday night meeting, for a tattoo parlor in the 6C's Shopping Center.

    The first order of business was to amend the city's zoning ordinance to allow a tattoo parlor in a General Business District zone. This passed council with a unanimous vote and little discussion.

  • Big Island woman faces 27 counts of embezzlement

    A Big Island woman is facing 27 counts of embezzlement from H & H Food Market.

    Christina Carmichael Poore, 37, was arrested in April. The 27 embezzlement charges span a time period between July 1, 2005, and Dec. 1, 2007. In each charge she is accused of embezzling more than $200 from H & H Food Market off Lee Jackson Highway.

    According to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney John Wheelock, Poore, who was employed by the store, allegedly used the store's return key to extract cash from the register. That key is used to obtain cash when a customer returns products.

  • Accident claims life of Florida teen

    A car accident early Sunday morning along the Smith Mountain Lake Parkway claimed the life of a Florida teenager.

    William Bradford Sowers, 19, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., died after being transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital from the single vehicle accident, according to Sgt. Robert Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police. He was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

  • Church expansion approved

    A Lake area church got the approval to build a new church facility on Hendricks Store Road.

    Troy Keaton, EastLake Community Church's pastor, said that the church had been planted in the Moneta area by a Roanoke church. At the time, the church acquired an existing building on Va. 122 and renovated it, knowing that they would outgrow it. That has now happened and that's why the church wants to build a 21,875 square foot facility.

  • Man dies in logging accident

    A 69-year-old Botetourt County man died following a logging accident Friday morning in Montvale.

    The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Friday in a remote area in Montvale off Partridge Lane, in the Goose Creek Valley area. Montvale fire and rescue crews responded to the scene.

    Killed in the accident was Haden Lee Dunbar, 69, of Webster Road. The man was described as a long-time employee of Eddie Dooley Inc., a Blue Ridge logging company.

  • Perriello campaign stresses community service

    Tom Perriello, the Democratic Party candidate for the 5th Congressional District, spent Friday afternoon working at Bedford Domestic Violence Services' office. Perriello was accompanied by some student interns working with his campaign.

    Perriello said that in addition to campaigning, he and his staff have been tithing their time by donating work to various non-profit organizations in the district. He said that he's doing this for several reasons.

  • County man sentenced to 48 years

    A Bedford County man faces 48 years in prison following conviction and sentencing by a jury.

    Michael Nicholas Bowden, 20, stood trial in Bedford County Circuit Court, Tuesday, charged with unlawfully detaining Kelli Beamer, also 20, choking her with his hands and raping her. The incident occurred at his father's home on Feb. 22.

    According to court testimony, the two had a relationship for several years. Beamer testified that it had been sexual since they were 16. The sex occurred at either Bowden's father's house or at Beamer's parents' house.
