  • Painting to raise money for historic mill

A painting by Franz Beisser is being raffled to raise money for Big Otter Mill, a historic mill on Va. 122 near Bedford.

Beisser, now retired, founded Bison Printing, located just west of Bedford. It’s a family-owned business that is now run by his sons.
Art has long played a big role in his life. When he first got the business rolling, nearly 40 years ago, one of his marketing tools was to do pen-and-ink drawings of churches for the covers of their church bulletins which he printed.

  • Top 10 Endangered Artifact Poll

On June 6, 1944, hours before embarking on the greatest invasion of World War II, American soldiers, sailors and airmen received a special message from their commander, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower.

The printed “pep talk” informed the men that they were “about to embark upon the great crusade,” defined the coming fight as one of freedom versus tyranny, and encouraged the men that “we will accept nothing less than full victory.”

  • Extra Points

The New York Giants have picked up another local star, Logan Thomas, in hopes that he will become a true NFL quarterback. Thomas will have a chance to learn under Eli Manning a great quarterback, even though I am not a fan of him.
Thomas will also get to work along side of Rashad Jennings, a Jefferson Forest graduate. Jennings was recently back in Lynchburg running a youth camp at Liberty University.
The Jennings family still lives locally which gives him more reason to come back and visit the town he grew up in.

  • Missing teen with autism found

The search for Timothy Kilpatrick had a happy ending. He was found sleeping beside dog kennel at 8:30 this morning a half mile north of his home.

  • The Iran deal one year later

One year ago this month, President Obama inked an historic nuclear deal with Iran. It hardly seems like a year has passed since the Iran Nuclear Agreement came into being over the opposition of me and many others. However, perhaps that is because very little has changed when it comes to Iran’s bad behavior.

Night boating isn’t just for fishermen and romantics any more.
A family night boat ride is exciting for children and grandchildren as they get to see a different lake after sunset. To make the most of a night boat ride opportunity, start with preparations for your boat…and for your passengers as well.

  • Ideas that matter

Here in Virginia our progenitors have paid with their lives for the ideas that matter to them and to the nation.

  • The GOP should beg for forgiveness

I certainly hope the American people were paying attention last week to the disgusting spectacle of hatred, racism, intolerance and dangerous ignorance on display in Cleveland.
It was truly a sad thing to see: The Republican Party we once knew –  one produced Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower – is dead, absolutely dead. It’s been replaced by this ugly, extreme, and hateful thing that was evidenced last week.
