Local orchards hit hard by weather

    February and March seem to have gotten flip-flopped this year with weather that would be more appropriate for mid-February paying the Bedford area an unwelcome visit last week.

    While this part of Virginia escaped the heavy snow that hit the Northeast, the same storm system brought this area nights with temperatures in the teens and high winds. Local orchards were hit hard because the springlike temperatures had fooled fruit trees into blooming nearly a month early.
