  • Has ‘moderate Mitt’ returned?

    During the Republican primaries, one of Mitt Romney’s advisers got in trouble for saying that once the nomination was won the campaign could use an “Etch-a-Sketch” and, well, reinvent some of its positions.
        For people already inclined to doubt Mitt Romney’s transformation from moderate Northeastern Republican to dyed-in-the-wool right-winger, it was considered evidence that they were correct all along.

  • More than a presidential election


        While the presidential election tends to get the most attention, it’s important to remember that we are electing a senator and members of the House of Representatives. These are important elections.
        The senate race features two former governors. Both George Allen and Tim Kaine have stopped in Bedford, although only Allen held a public meeting. Kaine’s only visit was a “Democratic” Party fundraiser that the press was barred from.

        I guess I should not be surprised Rick Howell is affiliated with Progressives.
        Mr. Cook’s statement of what I said is not accurate.  We were discussing what to do about the poverty produced by illegitimate children and I stated it would be better to execute the parents and put the child up for adoption.

  • Local GOP volunteer: Execute 'illegitimate' parents

    Mr. Clifford Russell’s letters in this paper have always made me chuckle; they’re so predictable and so extreme. He rants about something he calls the “atheistic, socialistic media.” He links Democrats to the Devil Himself, blaming our party for every possible social ill.
        He presents his very extreme right-wing views as somehow “Christian,” and of course, by doing that, he thinks he can justify it.

  • Do we really want to be like Europe?


        We have less than four weeks to go before election day when we will make decisions that will decide the direction in which our country moves.
        President Barack Obama, who wants four more years, seems to have a vision for turning America into Europe. Europe is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there and I’m glad that my German, English, Italian and Welsh ancestors came here, starting in the late 18th century. I’m very happy that I am not European.

  • To tweak or not to tweak, that is the question

        Bedford County Board of Supervisor member Ms. Tammy Parker and various members of the Bedford County Planning Department staff have announced that they were at odds with senior staff on the issue of whether or not the updating of the county’s zoning ordinance to bring it in line with the Comprehensive Plan should be comprehensively rewritten or simply “tweaked.”

  • Town Meeting

    I will be holding a Town Meeting at the Moneta Library on Saturday, October 13 starting at 10 a.m..  
        I would like to spend some time discussing the Bedford County 2025 Comprehensive Plan.  This Plan was adopted in 2007.  There is a requirement to review and update the Plan at least every five years.

  • The ‘horse race’ looks good for Obama

    The chief lament in the presidential campaign right now may well be “so many polls, and so little time.”
        Time, that is, to stack them up all together and see how and if they make sense. Polls are the chief element of the “horse race” aspect of the campaign, obsessing over who’s winning and by how much, regardless of issues.

  • That’s a lot of money


        Last week District 5 Supervisor Steve Arrington reported to his fellow supervisors that the school board has developed a long range capital improvement plan with a price tag of $120 million. Arrington along with District 6 Supervisor Annie Pollard are the two supervisors who serve on the school liaison committee.
