  • All quiet in the Baltic

Back at the end of June, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin made news when he sacked a large number of senior naval officers in Russia’s Baltic Fleet. There was a lot of speculation as to why Vladimir Vladimirovich did this. One line of thought that appeared in news stories at the time is that he did it because these officers refused to act more aggressively toward NATO ships operating in the Baltic.

  • History will honor Hillary’s nomination

I had intended to devote this entire column to the historic triumph of the first woman nominee for president by a major party – and I will get to that – but Donald Trump’s stupid utterances have a way of seizing one’s attention.
After whining about the air conditioning in the ballroom at his Hotel Roanoke appearance, Trump had indicated that it was so bad he might not pay the bill. It was a petulant moment to be sure, but he has a lot of those.

  • To the Citizens of Bedford County

    By Mike Brown
    Sheriff

On behalf of all of us, here at the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, I wish to thank those who continue to express their support and appreciation of law enforcement.  These last few months have been tenuous to say the least, but the expressions of kindness have certainly lifted the spirits of this agency.   Delicious baked goods, fresh fruit and handmade cards from children are all very much appreciated.

Mosquitos are a pest during any given summer. But, this year they are raising particular alarm in light of the Zika virus outbreak to our south. As concerns about transmission in the United States have grown, Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have called for a response from the federal government.

  • The Iran deal one year later

One year ago this month, President Obama inked an historic nuclear deal with Iran. It hardly seems like a year has passed since the Iran Nuclear Agreement came into being over the opposition of me and many others. However, perhaps that is because very little has changed when it comes to Iran’s bad behavior.

Night boating isn’t just for fishermen and romantics any more.
A family night boat ride is exciting for children and grandchildren as they get to see a different lake after sunset. To make the most of a night boat ride opportunity, start with preparations for your boat…and for your passengers as well.

  • And, speaking of Loretta Lynch

It comes as no surprise that FBI Director James Comey decided not to refer charges against Hillary Clinton. It’s not because I believe Comey honestly believes no charges are warranted. It’s because I believe Comey was doing what his boss, Attorney General Loretta Lynch told him to do.
