  • The worst Cabinet choices ever

As most Americans continue to be horrified by the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, his selections for Cabinet positions bring to mind Hillary Clinton’s description of his supporters.
“A basket of deplorables” is what she called them, a true remark for which she took a lot of heat. It’s pretty clear that what we’re going to get for his Cabinet falls into three chilling categories: corporate billionaires; military generals; and climate change deniers.

  • Guardians of the Lake

    By Casey Kroll

    Smith Mountain Lake Association

As I have shared in several of my previous articles, when I moved to Smith Mountain Lake about four years ago, I experienced many, many surprises.

  • I hope you found a way out

    By Ashley Rambo Shaw
    Brownsburg IN

Jason was my best friend in the third grade, and he was hopelessly poor.  He was what I call “Appalachian poor” – a destitution without the web of resources available in an urban area.

  • The Claus Conspiracy

    By Brandi Mitchell
    Intern

When you think of Christmas, you think of decorated trees, of holiday festivities, of family and of food. But among these pleasant images, many people often think of a jolly elderly fellow who delivers gifts at midnight to all the children of the world.
A fellow who goes by the name of Claus. Santa Claus.

  • Did Russia ‘elect’ Donald Trump?

As the disaster of The Great Stupidity of 2016 sinks in, it’s more and more clear how the Electoral College Only victory of Donald Trump is complicated by his bizarre bromance with Vladimir Putin and Russia.
As this was written, the CIA had announced that it was clear Russia had worked covertly to influence the election in favor of Trump. The Wikileaks revelations about DNC e-mails came from Russia.

  • Be a Master Gardener

    By Sue Becker
    Bedford Extension Master Gardener

The recent “Growing For Holiday Centerpieces”, put on in conjunction with the Bedford Public Libraries and Bedford Extension Master Gardeners, is just the latest example of educational community outreach by Virginia Cooperative Extension Bedford Master Gardeners.

  • Trump conned a lot of Christians

During the election, there was a stupid sign in Bedford County along U.S. 460 East that claimed to quote Donald Trump. It read “No one reads the Bible more than I do.”
Sounds like him, doesn’t it? We know how he brags about himself. No one knows more, or does anything better, than him. But if people really believe that he’s some sort of private holy man, reading the Bible all the time, well, they’re easy to fool.

  • Pay study results anticipated in advance

    By Steve Wilkerson
    Chairman
    Bedford County Board of Supervisors

It has come to my attention that there are some questions regarding the timing of the implementation of Bedford County’s pay and classification study. I wanted to take a moment to discuss the timeline of events regarding the eighteen month process that led to the adoption of a new pay plan for the County’s employees.

  • The Year of Your Youth

    By Brandi Mitchell

If you looked on my phone right now, you would find a playlist entitled “The Year of My Youth.” Thirty-two songs, all written about being 17. No coincidence, I am 17. And I can personally attest that this is a year unlike any other.

  • Asking the right questions

This letter is in response to the article published in the November 2, 2016 edition of the Bedford Bulletin along with conversations I have had with local decision makers concerning the apparent need for an business class hotel to be built within the boundaries of the Town of Bedford. Since our reporter did not go armed with the proper questions for the individuals they quoted, I would like to ask some now.
